South Georgia Technical College is located in Americus, Georgia in the heart of Southwest Georgia within an area steeped in rich history. Many historical landmarks and points of interest are all within driving distance of SGTC.

Andersonville Historic Site

The site of a Civil War prison camp, the 515-acre park consists of the historic prison site and the National Cemetery. In 1998 the National Prisoner of War Museum opened at Andersonville, dedicated to the men and women of this country who have suffered captivity.

Boyhood home of Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

This site includes President Carter’s residence, boyhood farm, school, and the railroad depot, which served as his campaign headquarters during the 1976 election. The Plains High School serves as the park’s museum and visitor center. The Jimmy Carter National Preservation District includes part of the town of Plains and its environs. The area surrounding the residence is under the protection of the Secret Service and the home is not open to the public.

Habitat for Humanity Global Village & Discovery Center

This interactive site offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the devastating effects of poverty and the work of Habitat volunteers throughout the world. At the village, you can see life-size Habitat houses from countries around the world.

Historic Downtown Americus & Windsor Hotel

Beautiful Historic Downtown Americus offers many restaurants and retail establishments. One of the centerpieces of downtown is the Historic Windsor Hotel. Built in 1892, the Windsor is a full-service hotel offering many amenities including the Windsor Spa and Floyd’s Pub.

Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park & Golf Course

Established as a memorial to U.S. veterans, this park features a museum with aircraft, armored vehicles, uniforms, weapons, medals and other items from the Revolutionary War through the Gulf War. The Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club is a privately operated conference center with 78 lodge rooms, 10 cottages and a restaurant. The SAM Shortline Excursion Train runs through the park on its way from Cordele to Plains, allowing riders to see an antique telephone museum, Habitat for Humanity's Global Village, President Jimmy Carter's boyhood farm and other attractions. An 18-hole golf course and pro shop, along with 8,600-acre Lake Blackshear, make this one of Georgia’s most popular state parks.
