Coaches Information

James Frey James Frey

James Frey is the Athletic Director and Lady Jets head basketball coach. He was named head women’s basketball on June 18, 2012. In his first year as the Lady Jets head coach they posted a 20 – 12 record and made it to the conference tournament final four. The Lady Jets earned a sweet 16 berth to the National Tournament in Salina, Kansas during his second season.

Frey was a member of the Coastal Georgia men’s basketball staff for over 20 years, serving as a recruiter and assistant coach. During his time with the Mariners, the team won three regular season championships in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and one tournament championship before leaving the league following the 2010 – 2011 season to start competing as a four-year program in the NAIA.

Frey was responsible for many facets of the basketball program including scheduling, purchasing, overseeing individual player workouts, scouting opponents and preparing scouting reports, organizing and running summer youth and high school team camps and monitoring the academic progress of Coastal Georgia players.

In addition to working with the Coastal Georgia men’s team, Frey was also the assistant coach for the Mariners women’s team which played its first season in 2011 – 2012. The team finished 19 – 10.

A graduate of Glynn Academy high school in Brunswick, Georgia, Frey earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sports and Fitness Management from Troy University.

Frey and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Lindsey and Will.

Travis Garrett Travis Garrett

Travis Garrett was recently named the Jets head basketball coach. Garrett has served as the head coach at USC-Salkehatchie and Clinton Junior College in Division I in the National Junior College Athletic Association area was well as an assistant coach at Chipola College in Marianna, FL; Northeastern University at Boston, MA; and Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL.

He was responsible for building the nationally known junior college basketball program at USC Salkehatchie, where he served as head coach from 2007 through 2014. The Indians had discontinued their basketball program from 1996 until Garrett took over as head coach in 2007.

Coach Garrett led the Indians to the Region X and District X
runner-up positions in both 2012 and 2013 and a regular season championship in 2008. In 2013, the Indians qualified for the NJCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas and made the first trip ever for a USC Salkehatchie athletic team to a national championship tournament. He left USC-Salkehatchie to become an assistant coach at South Carolina State University in 2014.

In addition to his success as a coach at the collegiate level, Garrett was also a standout player on the court. He was named one of the Top 100 Junior College Players in the US by Street and Smith Magazine in 1992 as a member of the College of Central Florida squad in the JUCO division and then he was named Trans America Athletic Conference All-Tournament in 1994 at Stetson University in Deland, FL.

Garrett has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Management from Stetson University in Deland, FL and worked in the Sports Information Office at Stetson. He also has an Associate of Arts degree from the College of Central Florida in Ocala, Florida.

Kezia Conyers Kezia Conyers

Kezia Conyers is the Lady Jets assistant basketball coach. In her first and second seasons with the Lady Jets, Kezia helped guide the ladies to a sweet 16 berth at the National Tournament held in Salina, KS.

Kezia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. She had an outstanding basketball career as a player at Appalachian State. She was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year for 2002 – 2003, was the ASU Women’s Basketball MVP for 2004 – 2005 and again in 2005 – 2006. Kezia was also the Southern Conference Player of the Month in February 2006, named an All Southern Conference Selection for 2005 – 2006, and was selected to the NCCSIA All-State team. She is currently ranked 13th in all-time scoring at Appalachian State University with 1,211 points. She was also a member of the WBCA Nike’s “So You Want To Be a Coach” program in April 2007.

In addition to her outstanding career as a women’s basketball player, Conyers also has both high school and college coaching experience. She previously worked as the guard development coach at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, FL. She was also an assistant coach at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC and has served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Maclay High School and FAMU High school in Tallahassee, FL.

At Converse College she was also the intramural coordinator and has been involved with numerous community service organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, Soul Santa, and the Big Bend Homeless Coalition.

In addition to her coaching duties, Kezia will also be working as an instructor as well as overseeing intramurals and other campus life activities.

Chris Ballauer Chris Ballauer

Chris Ballauer is the Jets assistant basketball coach. He was previously an assistant coach with the Lady Jets and helped guide the ladies to a sweet 16 berth in the National Tournament in Salina, Kansas during the 2013 – 2014 season.

Chris comes to South Georgia Tech from the College of Coastal Georgia where he was an assistant under Mariners Head Coach Gerald Cox for 14 years. He graduated from Central Gwinnett High School in 1995 and moved to Brunswick, Georgia to play basketball at Brunswick Junior College.

Chris received his Associates of Liberal Arts from the College of Coastal Georgia and is currently pursuing his Bachelors of General Studies with a Minor in education. He has also earned his Personal Training certification.

In addition to his coaching duties, Chris will also be working as an instructor as well as overseeing intramurals and other campus life activities.
