Thursday July 22, 2010
South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets rising sophomore Ophelia McMath and SGTC Women’s basketball coach Brandan Harrell had the opportunity to participate in and attend the NJCAA Women’s Basketball All-Star games recently at Pensacola State College in Pensacola, Florida.

Only the top 40 NJCAA rising sophomore women’s basketball players were invited to participate in the All-Star games. The games took place at Lou Ross Center at Pensacola State College and approximately 100 NCAA coaches attended the event.

“This is an excellent opportunity for rising sophomores to showcase their talent and skills to Division I coaches,” said South Georgia Technical College Coach Brandan Harrell who attended the All-Star competition. “I felt honored to have a player invited to participate."

This is only the second year that the NJCAA has hosted the Women’s Basketball All-Star tournament and Ophelia McMath is the first SGTC Lady Jet to appear in the event. The NJCAA Women’s Basketball All-Star games gave college programs from around the country an opportunity to see the best junior college players compete at the same time in one venue.

McMath was a member of the Lynx All-Star team and her team won one game and lost one game. She scored three points in the opening game that the Lynx dropped to their All-Star opponents and then she came back and contributed 12 points in the second game to help lift her team to victory.

McMath was teamed with two players from Seward County Community College from Kansas, two from Gulf Coast Community College in Florida, two from Lake Land Community College as well as players from Rock Valley Community College, Colorado Northwestern Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College.

McMath who is from Apopka, Florida helped lead the Lady Jets to their first NJCAA National Tournament appearance this past season and their first GJCAA Tournament championship. The Lady Jets finished the season with a 29 – 7 overall record and their best showing in their six year history.

McMath is one of three SGTC Lady Jets from the GJCAA Championship team returning this season. Joining her will be point guard Brittany Mills from Ludowici, GA and center Naima Garcia from Trenton, NJ.
