Friday September 21, 2012
South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Air Conditioning Technology student Truman Waters of Americus was named Student of Excellence for the month of September during the college’s student recognition ceremony held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus recently.
Waters received a plaque of recognition and a financial award from SGTC for his accomplishments. He was nominated for this honor by SGTC Air Conditioning Technology instructor Glynn Cobb.

“I want to thank my instructor for the nomination. It’s a real honor,” said Waters. “I have two sons, one of which is also in the Air Conditioning Technology program, and they are my motivation. They are the reason I strive for excellence.”

“Truman is a wonderful student,” said instructor Glynn Cobb. “He represented the Air Conditioning Technology in SkillsUSA state competitions earlier this year, earning a gold medal for SGTC.”

Each month, students from certain divisions selected for that month are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. This month’s ceremony recognized students in technical and industrial programs at SGTC. The winner is selected based on grades, work ethic, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion. Each nominee is presented with a certificate and a South Georgia Technical College Student of Excellence T-shirt.

Other students nominated for the month of September included: William McMahan of Warwick, Drafting Technology; Michael Waldron of Americus, Electrical Systems Technology; Mack Parker of Americus, Electronics Technology; Jami Sapp of Americus, Horticulture; Sam Kinchens of Unadilla, Industrial Systems Technology; Ryan Unsworth of Dawson, Machine Tool Technology; and Kelsey Johnson of Americus, Welding and Joining Technology.

Nominating instructors were Glynn Cobb, Air Conditioning Technology; Lora Wiseman, Drafting Technology; James Halford, Electrical Systems Technology; Mike Collins, Electronics Technology; Mark Collier, Horticulture; Phil Deese, Industrial Systems Technology; Gil Pittman, Machine Tool Technology; and Ted Eschmann, Welding and Joining Technology.
