Jets and Lady Jets Named to GJCAA All-Conference Teams

Four members of the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams were named to the GJCAA Region XVII All-Conference teams for the 2008 season and Lady Jets head basketball coach Brandan Harrell was selected as the GJCAA Regional XVII women’s basketball coach of the year for 2008.
Alice Holmes was named the Georgia Junior College Athletic Player of the Year and her teammate LeSha Brigham received the GJCAA second team All-Conference nomination. The Jets’ DeAntre Jefferson was named to the men’s GJCAA first team All-Conference squad as well as the All-Freshmen team and Americus’ Carlos West was named to the second team All-Conference squad.
Coach Brandan Harrell’s Lady Jets entered the 2007 – 2008 post season tournament with a 21 – 8 overall record and a 9 – 3 GJCAA record. Despite having only three losses, the Lady Jets finished the regular season in third place. They are hoping to improve on that record in the GJCAA Region XVII tournament which is being played at South Georgia Technical College this week.
The Lady Jets are in their fourth season and Coach Harrell has been at the helm of the program since it began in 2004. That first season, the Lady Jets were 8 – 23 overall and finished third in the GJCAA with a 5 – 7 record. The next season, the Lady Jets were 17-15 overall with a conference record of 6 – 6. In 2006 – 2007 they finished the season with a 9 – 21 overall record and a 3 – 9 conference record.
In a remarkable comeback this season, the Lady Jets and Coach Brandan Harrell are hoping to advance to the finals of the GJCAA conference tournament and capture their first Conference championship.
They will be led the GJCAA Conference Player of the Year, sophomore guard Alice Holmes of Augusta, GA. This is the first time that a member of the Lady Jets basketball team has held this honor.
Holmes, a 5’4” sophomore guard, is averaging 13.3 points per game and 4 rebounds per game. In addition to being named the GJCAA Region XVII Player of the Year, Holmes was also named to the GJCAA Region XVII first team All-Conference squad.
She is currently studying Computer Information Systems at South Georgia Technical College is a graduate of TW Josey High School in Augusta, Georgia.
LeSha Brigham, a 5’6” sophomore from Savannah, Georgia, was also singled out from the Lady Jets for conference honors. She was named to the second team All-Conference team for the 2007 – 2008 season. She is averaging 12.1 points per game and has an average of 3.5 rebounds per game.
In addition to the top honors earned by the Lady Jets, two of Coach Steven Wright’s Jets were also spotlighted by the GJCAA. DeAntre Jefferson was named to the first team All-Conference squad and the All-Freshman team and Carlos West earned second team All-Conference honors.
DeAntre Jefferson is a 6’7” forward from Bloomington, IL. He has scored a total of 341 points for an average of 12.2 points per game. He also has 275 rebounds or an average of 9.8 per game. He is a 58% field goal shooter and is shooting 58% from the foul line on the season.
Carlos West, a sophomore guard from Americus, has a total of 454 points and is averaging 15.7 points per game. He is a 37% three-point shooter and a 47% field goal percentage shooter. He makes 74% of his free throws.
