Hairstyling Competition November 2009
The South Georgia Technical College Cosmetology students competed in a hair styling competition in the Cosmetology lab on the SGTC Americus campus recently.

NTHS induction ceremony
The South Georgia Technical College chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted 34 new members in a ceremony in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus recently. Mrs. Carolyn Myers, South Georgia Tech’s NTHS Advisory, presided over the ceremony.

In order to receive this honor, students must be nominated by an instructor, be a full-time student at SGTC for at least two complete quarters, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.

The student must also demonstrate leadership abilities and display a commendable attitude, good mentality, worthy character, credible achievement, and a desire to pursue a career in the field of his or her technical study.

Health Day 2009
Practical Nursing students measured height and weight, body composition, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and flexibility at SGTC's recent Health Day. Glucose and vision screenings were also performed by the students and wellness education was provided.

Students at South Georgia Technical College’s Americus campus recently participated in a Halloween parade and costume contest.
Participants in the parade and costume contest represented many of SGTC’s programs, including Cosmetology, Aviation, Practical Nursing, Criminal Justice, Drafting, Welding, Computer Information Systems, and the Lady Jets basketball team.

Student Leadership Retreat 2009
South Georgia Technical College students elected into student club leadership positions had the opportunity to participate in a Student Leadership Retreat held at the Civic Center in Leslie recently.

Presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, parliamentarians, reporters, and historians of the Student Leadership Council, Skills USA, and Phi Beta Lambda clubs from the Americus and Cordele campuses met to learn the protocol of their positions and discuss ideas for club activities for the upcoming year.

Skills USA 2009 Winners
South Georgia Technical College students recently participated in Skills USA competitions for their respective program areas. The gold medal or top winners from each competition will compete at the state Skills USA competition in Augusta on April 17th and 18th, 2009.

The Skills USA program hosts local, state, and national competitions for students to showcase their skills learned through hands-on training in the classroom. The program’s goal is to ensure a skilled workforce in America through a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives.

PROBE Fair 2008
SGTC’s Career Services department hosted this year's PROBE Fair in the James S. Peters Gymnasium on SGTC's Americus campus. Colleges from all over Georgia and Alabama sent representatives to assist high school students in deciding where to continue their education. Topics such as financial aid, housing, programs of study, admissions requirements, scholarships, and campus life were discussed with the representatives. The Fair is held annually on different college campuses such as South Georgia Technical College, as well as other colleges and universities around Georgia

GOAL Banquet 2007
The 2007 GOAL Banquet was held Wednesday, March 14, in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus Campus. Jon Donnelly, a student in the Welding and Joining Technology program, was named SGTC's GOAL winner. He will now go on to compete with GOAL winners from across the state for the title of state GOAL winner, the GOAL medallion, and the grand prize of a new car.
Donnelly's nominating instructor is Duane Register.

Tornado Damage in Americus
A tornado struck Americus, Georgia on Thursday Night March 1, 2007. Two people were killed, and there was extensive property damage. President George W. Bush toured Americus on Saturday March 3rd and declared Sumter County to be a Federal Disaster Area. These pictures taken by Don Smith show some of the damage that was caused by the tornado.

Instructors at South Georgia Technical College have nominated 25 students for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL).

A screening committee of administrators at South Georgia Technical College will now review all the nominations and interview each of the students. After the nominees have been ranked, four finalists will be chosen to compete for the title of South Georgia Technical College GOAL winner.

The four finalists will then be interviewed and evaluated by a selection committee of representatives from business and industry. The student judged most outstanding will be designated for the college’s nominee for the title of state GOAL winner and will compete with representatives from the state’s other technical colleges for the state award. The winner of the state GOAL title, which awarded for excellence in leadership and ability, will receive the GOAL medallion and the grand prize of a new automobile.

Lady JETS vs. Truett-McConnell
The Lady Jets took on the Truett-McConnell Lady Bears Thursday, March 2 in the first round of the GJCAA conference at Darton College in Albany. The Lady JETS were victorious and will now take on the Jaguars of Georgia Perimeter College in the second round.

Bee for Literacy 2006
The annual Bee for Literacy was held at South Georgia Technical College's John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center March 12. Teams from local businesses and organzations participated in the event. SGTC's three-member team, consisting of Vanessa Wall, David Kuipers, and Whitney Crisp, won first prize for best introduction

Former President Jimmy Carter Speaks at SGTC
Sumter County's favorite son spoke to a combined meeting of all local civic clubs held at the Pope Center on the Campus of South Georgia Technical College.

Jimmy Carter of Plains, the 39th President of the United States, spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of over 200 people. President Carter thanked the people of Sumter County for supporting him throughout his political career. "I know of no other politician in American history who has received the same amount of support from his friends and neighbors," he said

SGTC Honors Bob House
South Georgia Technical College honored the memory of Bob House betwen basketball games at The Hangar on Saturday night.

Bob House was the winner of the contest to name the SGTC basketball team several years ago, and he received as part of his prize a Jets jersey with his name on the back and a the number 2.

The number 2 has now been officially retired, and it will hang in the Hangar lobby with a plaque honoring him

Winter Graduation 2005
Winter Commencement exercises were held Thursday, December 15 at the James S. Peters Gymnasium on the South Georgia Technical College Americus campus. Over 140 awards were conferred. Vanessa Wall, Criminal Justice instructor and 2005 SGTC and Soutwest Georgia Consortium Instructor of the Year, was the keynote speaker for the event.

SGTC Hosts Special Olympics

SGTC Underwater Welding
Duane Register, South Georgia Technical College Welding and Joining instructor, recently gave a demonstration of underwater welding in the new 10,000 gallon tank located on the Americus campus built by Welding and Joining students during the past three quarters. This Introduction to Underwater Welding course is new for Fall Quarter and is offered to give students a taste of underwater welding before enrolling in a specialized school to become certified
