SGTC Jets and Lady Jets split with Albany Tech

Albany, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets split Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference match-ups with the Albany Technical College Titans and Lady Titans Monday. The Lady Jets opened with a 76 – 50 victory and the Jets suffered a narrow 68 – 63 loss to the Titans.
The Lady Jets started out slowly and were only up 16 – 14 at the end of the first quarter. A great second quarter allowed the Lady Jets to pull ahead 36 – 22 at the end of the first half. South Georgia Tech continued to outscore Albany Tech in the second half and wound up with an impressive 76 – 50 win.
The win propelled the Lady Jets to 5 – 2 in the GCAA and 10 – 12 overall. They are still in second place in the GCAA behind East Georgia (6 – 1). Central Georgia (3 – 3) is in third place, Andrew College (4-4), is fourth, Albany Tech is fifth (4 – 5) and Southern Crescent Tech is in sixth place (0-7).
Freshman Ja’Niya Broome led the Lady Jets in scoring with 28 points. She also had 10 rebounds for a double – double night. She added seven assists and five steals. Sophomore Taja Bennett was close behind with 22 points. She led the team in rebounds with 11 for another double-double. She also had four steals and one rebound.
Freshman Candice Ganga was the only other Lady Jet in double-digits and she had 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal. Jada Jones added five points, Jaidyn Elam had three, Sephora Benth and Sarah Mellouk both scored two points and Glory Kaine closed out the scoring with one point.
Following that impressive win, the Jets stumped their toe and lost their second straight conference game. The Jets are currently tied for fourth place with a 4 – 4 GCAA record and are 8 – 14 overall. Central Georgia Tech is currently undefeated in the conference and in first place with an 8 – 0 record. South Georgia State and Albany Tech are now tied for second place with identical 5 – 3 performances. South Georgia Tech and East Georgia State College are tied for fourth place. Gordon College (4 – 5), Georgia Highlands (3-5), Andrew (2 – 6) and Southern Crescent (1-6) are in 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th places respectively.
The Jets fell behind 33 – 32 at the end of the first half and Albany Tech outscored South Georgia Tech 35 – 31 in the second half to clinch the 68 – 63 victory. Albany Tech had three players in double-figures with Tyler Husband scoring 22, Brennan Wansley, 21, and Nicholas Durham 13.
Both the Jets and the Lady Jets will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Macon to face Central Georgia Tech in a conference double-header. The Lady Jets open at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Jets and Titans at 7:30 p.m. South Georgia Tech will return home on Saturday, February 14th for an important conference double-header against East Georgia. The Lady Jets begin play at 1 p.m. followed by the Jets at 3 p.m.
