South Georgia Technical College Criminal Justice students recently learned more about career opportunities in emergency communications during a visit from Kaitlyn Adams of the Crisp County E911 Center.
Adams, a Tele III/CTO with Crisp County E911, has worked as a dispatcher for five years. She is also a South Georgia Technical College student currently pursuing an associate degree in Criminal Justice through online classes.
Criminal Justice instructor Teresa Hall McCook invited Adams to speak as part of the students’ study of the four main divisions of law enforcement and the range of careers available within the criminal justice field.
During the visit, Adams discussed the role dispatchers play in the criminal justice system and shared firsthand insight into the responsibilities and challenges of working in a 911 communications center.
McCook said the presentation gave students a better understanding of emergency communications as a career option while helping connect classroom instruction with real-world experience.
“Guest speakers like Kaitlyn help our students make connections between what they learn in the classroom and the careers they may pursue in the future,” McCook said. “Her visit also opened their eyes to another career opportunity within criminal justice that they may not have previously considered.”
McCook also noted the added significance of having Adams return to SGTC as a current student while already working in the field.
“We appreciate Kaitlyn taking the time to visit our class, share her experiences and encourage our students as they explore their future careers in criminal justice,” McCook said. “We also appreciate her as a student coming back to pursue her degree.”
The visit highlighted one of the many career paths available to Criminal Justice graduates and gave students an opportunity to hear directly from a professional working in an essential public safety role.
