Macon State Prison Recruiter Speaks to SGTC Criminal Justice Students

South Georgia Technical College Criminal Justice students recently learned more about careers in corrections during a visit from Lt. Lamikia Green, a recruiter with Macon State Prison.

Green spoke to Criminal Justice instructor Teresa McCook’s students about what Macon State Prison looks for in potential employees and the variety of career opportunities available within the Georgia Department of Corrections. She also shared insight from her 23 years of service and the different positions she has held during her career.

McCook said Green’s visit helped students connect classroom instruction with real-world experience and gave them a better understanding of the range of careers available within the corrections field.

Green explained that Macon State Prison is currently hiring for a number of positions, including correctional officers, behavioral health counselors, food service specialists, maintenance personnel and medical staff. She also discussed broader opportunities within the Department of Corrections in areas such as administration, criminal investigations, human resources, training, information technology and education.

Green also emphasized the value of continued education and professional development. Although some corrections positions do not require a college degree, she told students that additional education can create opportunities for career advancement.

In addition to working as a recruiter, Green is also a current SGTC Criminal Justice student and is a candidate for graduation in December with an associate degree.

“I chose to come back and obtain my degree because personal growth, achievement of a dream, being an example, building my confidence, personal satisfaction and professional development are very important to me,” Green said.

McCook said visits from professionals such as Green give students an opportunity to hear firsthand about career expectations and options while helping them see how what they are learning at SGTC can apply in the workplace.

South Georgia Technical College offers over 200 programs of study in high-demand fields. Depending on the program students can earn an associate degree, diploma or technical certificate of credit. Apply now for spring semester.
