South Georgia Technical College’s Career Services Department recently hosted mock interviews for fourth-semester students in the Medical Assisting program, providing practical guidance for the students as they prepare to enter the healthcare workforce.
The mock interviews were conducted by SGTC Director of Career Services Cynthia Carter and SGTC WIOA Coordinator Sandhya Muljibhai for students enrolled in the Medical Assisting program under the instruction of Sheri Bass. The goal of the mock interviews was to ensure that each student felt confident in the interview process and to left to help them pursue employment opportunities upon graduation.
Carter also conducted resume writing workshops for the students earlier in the semester. She emphasized the importance of viewing a resume as a personal marketing document that highlights accomplishments, demonstrates impact, and showcases education, professional experience, and technical skills. Students learned how to tailor resumes for individual job applications by incorporating keywords and language from job descriptions, making their qualifications more visible to hiring managers. A person resume combined with good interview skills are key to students entering the workforce.
Carter also discussed strategies for organizing work history, emphasizing the importance of listing recent employment experience and clearly outlining responsibilities and accomplishments through concise bullet points. For students with limited work experience, she encouraged including relevant coursework, clinical experiences, projects, certifications, software proficiency, and other marketable skills.
In addition to resume development and mock interviews, students received guidance on selecting strong professional references. Carter stressed the value of choosing supervisors, managers, or other professional contacts who can speak positively about a candidate’s work ethic, job performance, and qualifications.
According to Instructor Sheri Bass, the students are currently completing clinical experiences with healthcare providers including Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Phoebe Clinic Ellaville, and Veranda Americus, among others. The students are scheduled to graduate in December.
