Two South Georgia Technical College dual enrollment students from Crisp County High School took first and second place ribbons at the Perry State Fair recently for their welding creations. They are students in SGTC Crisp County Welding Instructor Thomas Mayo’s class.
Ben Ergle, Jr., and Kenneth Brown captured first place on a Deer head and second place on a fish design. It was a group project for the duo. Ben Ergle, Sr., father of the ribbon winning Ergle, is a member of the SGTC Crisp County Center Welding Advisory Board.
“I am so proud of both of these young men,” said SGTC Crisp County Welding Instructor Thomas Mayo. “They are both outstanding students and I have enjoyed having them in my classes. I hope they will continue their welding studies after they graduate from high school. They have a bright future in this industry.”
The competition takes place at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry and is part of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) Skills Challenge. This is an annual event that features over 100 high school students from across Middle Georgia testing their trade skills.
The categories in addition to welding, include carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and masonry. This event doubles as a massive networking opportunity connecting thousands of students with local construction industry employers and recruitment team.
