The Precision Machining and Manufacturing and Welding and Joining Technology programs at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently convened a joint advisory committee meeting on the college’s Americus campus. Held in the welding classroom of the McClendon Building, the meeting brought together instructors and industry representatives to review program progress and exchange ideas for ongoing development.
Advisory committees play an important role in helping SGTC maintain high-quality, industry-aligned programs. Precision Machining instructor Jake Pittman, along with Welding instructors Ted Eschmann and Brad Aldridge, shared updates on curriculum adjustments, enrollment patterns, community engagement efforts, and student accomplishments.
Committee members contributed feedback on ways to strengthen the programs, including suggestions related to curriculum enhancements, emerging technologies, expanded training opportunities, and potential employment or internship pathways. Additional discussion focused on salary expectations and the skills needed for students to be workforce-ready.
Attending the meeting were Gil Pittman, owner of Pittman Machine Service; Scott Barry, owner of Johnson Metal Products; and Andy Oliver, Supervisor of the Machine Shop and Sheet Metal Shop at the Marine Depot Maintenance Command. SGTC representatives included Academic Dean Dr. David Finley, WIOA Coordinator Sandhya Muljibhai, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs Melissa Hollis, and adjunct instructors Wayne Parker and Brayden Pilkenton.
Advisory committees like this one serve as an essential connection between industry and education, helping instructors remain informed about evolving technologies and industry standards so that students are better prepared for the workforce.
