SGTC Students Participate in Financial Literacy Workshop

South Georgia Technical College recently hosted a Financial Literacy Workshop for students on its Americus campus, giving participants an opportunity to learn practical strategies for managing money and making informed financial decisions.

The workshop was held in the Hicks Hall student center and focused on financial topics students may encounter as they move through college, enter the workforce, and take on greater personal financial responsibilities.

Charlene Pennymon, Vice President for Citizens Bank of Americus, served as the featured speaker. Drawing on her experience in banking and lending, Pennymon discussed several areas of personal finance designed to help students build a stronger foundation for long-term financial stability.

A major focus of the workshop was the importance of establishing and maintaining good credit. Pennymon explained how credit scores can affect a variety of financial decisions, including the ability to purchase a vehicle, rent an apartment, qualify for a loan, or secure favorable borrowing terms.

Students also learned about budgeting, saving, responsible borrowing, and the importance of keeping accurate financial records. Pennymon encouraged students to develop good financial habits early and to understand how everyday decisions can have a lasting impact on their financial future.

The workshop also gave students a chance to consider the importance of planning ahead, distinguishing between needs and wants, and using credit carefully. These skills can help students avoid common financial pitfalls while preparing for larger goals such as homeownership, career advancement, and long-term savings.

South Georgia Technical College regularly provides workshops and other student support services designed to complement classroom instruction and help students develop skills that contribute to success both in the workplace and in everyday life.

SGTC offers more than 200 associate degree, diploma, and technical certificate of credit programs designed to prepare students for careers in high-demand fields. For more information, visit southgatech.edu. Apply now for spring semester.
