Albany, GA - Over 20 South Georgia Technical College Aviation Maintenance and Aircraft Structural Technology students traveled to Albany recently to tour Thrush Aircraft Factory.
“A well-structured industry visit goes far beyond a simple tour,” said SGTC Aircraft Structural Technology instructor Jason Wisham. “It bridges the gap between classroom theory, academic knowledge, hands-on training, and real-world application.”
South Georgia Technical College Aviation Maintenance Instructor Paul Pearson and Aircraft Structural Technology Instructor Jason Wisham were able to take over 20 of their current students on a two- and one-half-hour walking tour of the Thrush Aircraft Factory in Albany recently.
The over 20 students were able to tour the entire facility and network with former SGTC graduates who are now working at Thrush. In each area, time was allocated for students to ask questions about daily operations, safety, and industry challenges.
SGTC Director of Career Services Cynthia Carter accompanied the students and instructors on the tour and acted as a bridge between the college and Thrush during the industry visit. She managed a pre-visit briefing preparing the students with elevator pitches, background information, and about hiring practices.
“I need to ensure students leave with actionable connections and a clear understanding of potential career pathways and the opportunity for paid internships,” said Carter. “Career Services continues to support student success through resume writing, mock interviews, and job search support.”
Thrush Aircraft are relied on for their role in helping operations of all sizes fertilize crops, control insects, eliminate weeds, and fight fires, something they don’t take lightly. Industry visits are important for the college and for Thursh who hires many of the SGTC graduates.
