Jason Wisham, South Georgia Technical College Aircraft Structural Technology instructor, was the recipient of a “Rocket Stove” made by South Georgia Technical College Crisp County Welding Instructor Thomas Mayo and the Crisp County Center welding students.
The students crafted the “Rocket Stove,” out of scrap metal and donated it to the SGTC Foundation to help raise funds for SkillsUSA competitions. A rocket stove is an ultra-efficient, wood burning stove that uses an L-shaped combustion chamber to create a powerful draft. By burning small twigs, sticks, or pellets rather than large logs, it produces intense heat with minimal smoke, making it a popular choice for camping, off-grid cooking, and emergency preparedness.
“This is an excellent way for students to practice different welding techniques and also give back to the college,” said Instructor Thomas Mayo. “The students can take pride in what they have accomplished and it benefits other students who are representing the college in the state and national SkillsUSA competitions.”
SGTC President Dr. John Watford thanked Mayo and the students for their hard work and generosity. “We are a community of ‘Doers & Makers,’” explained Watford. “Every generation has heard about ‘movers and shakers,’ but it’s the ‘Doers & Makers’ who really get the job done. At South Georgia Technical College, current and future students learn hands-on skills, in high-demand fields, that build a future with real opportunities, in less time, and without student debt. This is a great example of what our students can accomplish in a short period of time.”
If you or someone you know wants to become a “Doer & Maker,” apply today. Fall semester classes begin August 17th. Registration will be held on August 13, and SGTC can process the application, and assist with orientation and registration in just one day.
