Jets and Lady Jets sweep Southern Crescent Technical College

The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets swept Southern Crescent Technical College in a pair of Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) games recently. The win moved the nationally ranked Lady Jets to 10 – 0 in the GCAA and 20 – 2 overall while allowing the Jets to be 2 – 3 in the GCAA and 9 – 10 overall on the season.
The Lady Jets walked away with an impressive 113 – 36 victory over the South Crescent Lady Tigers while the Jets stopped a three game losing streak with an 84 – 69 win against the Southern Crescent Tigers. Both of Southern Crescent’s team are winless in the GCAA this season.
“It was good to get a win,” said South Georgia Technical College Jets head coach Travis Garrett. “We have lost three close ones over the past two weeks so I am hoping that this will turn the tide for us. We played better in spots but we still have some work to do.”
South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey felt the same way. “I am thankful for another conference win, but I am especially proud of the play of some of the younger players who got a lot of time on the court.”
Freshman guard Veronica Charles played 23 of the 40 minutes against Southern Crescent. She came off the bench to be the high scorer of the night with 24 points. She was 11 of 14 from the floor and hit two three point shots in four attempts.
She was joined by five other Lady Jets in double-digits. Freshman center Femme Sikuzani had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Anna McKendree had 11 points and four assists and then sophomores Niya Goudelock and Amara Edeh and freshman Sarah Lwambo each contributed 10 points each. Goudelock also had four steals and an assist, Edeh had eight rebounds, a blocked shot, steal and an assist and Lwambo had two rebounds, and three steals.
Sophomore guard Shamari Tyson scored nine points, sophomore Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din and freshman Hope Butera had six points each and then Moe Shida and Oumy Gueye scored five points each. Every Lady Jet had 10 or more minutes on the court in the conference match-up with Southern Crescent.
Following that impressive win by the Lady Jets, the Jets took the court and followed up with an 84 – 69 victory. The Jets were only up 42 – 35 at the end of the first half and struggled early in the second half before pulling ahead 78 – 51 and coasting on to the 84 – 69 win.
Freshman guard Lamont Sanders led the Jets in scoring with 19 points. He was seven of 10 from the field including three of six from the three-point line. He and Austin Hadden were the only two Jets to reach double figures. Hadden had 12 points. He was six of nine from the field.
Sophomore Toriano Lewis and Justin Johnson both added nine points, Jalen Reynolds and Tabais Long had seven points each, and Jonathan Kanyanga tossed in six points. Brice Paster and Denari Garrett accounted for four points each and sophomore guard Jaylen McKinney returned from being out with an injury to score three points. Jordan Stephens and Merdy Bata scored two apiece.
The Jets will host the fourth ranked South Georgia State College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a GCAA conference match-up in the hangar and then the Jets and the Lady Jets will both host Albany Tech in a conference double-header on Saturday, January 25th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
