Jets, Lady Jets players named GCAA Players of the Week again

South Georgia Technical College’s Marquel Wiggins (34) and Esther Adenike (24) were selected as the GCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball Players of the Week recently.

South Georgia Technical College Jets sophomore forward Marquel Wiggins and Lady Jets sophomore forward Esther Adenike were both selected as the Division I basketball Players of the Week for the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. This is the third consecutive week that both the South Georgia Technical College men’s and women’s players have been named as the GCAA Players of the week.
Wiggins, a 6’ 6” forward from Oglethorpe, was selected as the GCAA Men’s Division I player of the week after he led the South Georgia Technical College Jets to an amazing 96 – 88 overtime win over the Tallahassee Community College’s fourth ranked team in the nation.
Wiggins scored 31 points and pulled down 20 rebounds in that overtime win over Tallahassee. That was the first loss of the season for the Tallahassee team. South Georgia Tech’s men are now 5 – 5 on the season. They will play their first GCAA conference game on Wednesday, December 13th in Swainsboro when they face East Georgia.
South Georgia Tech’s Esther Adenike, a 6’ 2” sophomore forward from Lagos, Nigeria, was selected as the women’s Division I Player of the Week. She was selected after she scored 25 points, had 13 rebounds, three assist, two steals and two blocks in the Lady Jets conference win over Andrew College. This is her second GCAA Player of the week nomination in four weeks.
The Lady Jets are 11 – 1 overall and ranked eighth in the National Junior College Athletic Association national rankings this season. They are also currently 5 – 0 in the GCAA conference and ranked number one.
Adenike was a freshman last season and helped lead the Lady Jets to their third National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in four years under Lady Jets Head Coach James Frey. She was also selected to the NJCAA Region XVII Women’s Division I All-Tournament team as a freshman. She and her teammates tied the school record for the most wins and least losses with a 30 – 5 overall record. She returned this season along with three other players to help lead the squad back to the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Lady Jets and the Jets will play a double-header at home on Saturday, December 16th. The Lady Jets host Santa Fe College at 2 p.m. and the Jets will play Coastal Alabama-Monroeville at 4 p.m. The two teams will break for the Christmas holidays and then return home for the Jets and Lady Jets Classic’s on December 29th – December 31st. The Jets open at 3 p.m. on December 29th against Wake Tech and then face St. Petersburg College at 2 p.m. on December 30th. The Lady Jets will host Cape Fear at 8 p.m. on December 29th and then face the top ranked Gulf Coast Community College team at 8 p.m. on December 30th. They will also play East Florida College at 3 p.m. on December 31st to close out the tournament.
