The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets captured an impressive 82 – 51 victory over the Albany Tech Lady Titans Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference and post their sixth consecutive win this season.
The game was never in doubt as the Lady Jets dominated the Lady Titans almost from the opening buzzer. South Georgia Tech was up 28 – 12 at the end of the first quarter and despite allowing Albany Tech to close the gap in the second half, the Lady Jets still went into half time with a 44 – 25 lead.
The Lady Jets continued to outpace Albany Tech in the conference match-up and went ahead by as many as 34 points in the second half. South Georgia Tech was up 68 – 42 at the end of the third period and went on to take the 82 – 51 victory.
“We are still missing a lot of easy shots and turning the ball over too many times,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We are always glad to get a win and especially a conference win, but we have got to take advantage of the open shots we are getting and turn those into points on the board.”
The Lady Jets are currently ranked 11th nationally in the Division I National Junior College Athletic Association’s pre-season poll. They are 6 – 1 on the season and 3 – 0 in the conference. Their only loss was to Santa Fe College in their opening regular season contest this season.
Three Lady Jets posted double figures in the win. Bigue Sarr, the 6’ 3” center from DaKar, Senegal, led the team in scoring with 16 points. Twelve of those came in the first half. She also had five rebounds. Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, was the next leading scorer for the Lady Jets with 15 points and then freshman Kamaya Hollingshed from McDonough, GA closed out the double-digit scoring for the Lady Jets with 14 points. At one time, she was four from four from the foul line. She closed out the game shooting four of 10 from the three-point line and two of two from the free throw line.
Sophomore forward Fatou Pouye led the team in rebounding with 11 and then added six points as well. Freshman Center Laky Samo from Maputo, Mozambique, accounted for six points and seven rebounds and then sophomores Ricka Jackson and Mari Hill both tossed in four points each. Freshman guard Rio Yamazaki and freshman forward Oumy Gueye from Thies, Senegal came away with three points each and then freshman forward Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din from Decatur closed out the scoring with two points.
The Lady Jets put a lot of points on the board but their shooting percentages left a lot to be desired. The Lady Jets shot 40 percent from the field hitting 32 of 80 attempts. They were eight of 23 from the three-point line for a 34.8 percent success rate and hit 10 of 13 free throws.
The Lady Jets will travel to Rome for the Georgia Highlands Thanksgiving Classic on November 24th and 25th. They will face Roane State at 2 p.m. on the 24th and Pensacola on November 25th. The Lady Jets return home for another conference game on December 1st when they host Southern Crescent Technical College at 1 p.m. The Jets will play December 1 in their first game back after the holidays but they will be in Walterboro, SC, for a rematch with USC Salkahatchie. They will play at home on December 4th against Marion Military at 7 p.m.
