Rome, GA – The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets kept their conference record unblemished after driving to Rome, Georgia to face the second ranked Georgia Highlands and Lady Chargers head coach Brandon Harrell for the third time this season. The Lady Jets came away with the 58 – 52 decision and moved to 17 – 0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and 26 – 3 overall.
“It is hard to beat a team three times and this was no exception,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We had already secured the GCAA Division I regular season title but Georgia Highlands is always a tough competitor and they would have liked to have spoiled our unbeaten record in the conference.”
The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets have only had one other unbeaten regular season record in the 14-year history of the program. That was during the 2011 – 2012 season in Brandon Harrell’s last season as the Lady Jets head coach. His team went 19 – 0 in the GCAA and Harrell posted his 100th win as the Lady Jets head coach that same season. Coach Frey has had two one loss conference seasons and they came in 2017 – 2018 and 2016 – 2017.
This was the Lady Jets eighth straight victory. Sophomore forward Ricka Jackson led the Lady Jets in scoring with 17 points. She also had nine rebounds, two assists and one steal on the night to lead her team to the six-point win over Georgia Highlands.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves posted 12 points and sophomore guard Marie Hill accounted for 11 points to close out the double digit scoring for the Lady Jets. Hill had three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Nieves had two rebounds and one steal in that match-up.
Sophomore forward Fatou Pouye came up with seven points. Fresham Rio Yamazaki and freshman Kamya Hollignshed came off the bench to score three points each. Bigue Sarr, and Laky Samo were the only two other Lady Jets to score and they each had two points.
The Jets and Lady Jets will face Albany Technical College on Saturday, February 23rd at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in a double-header for the SGTC Alumni/Sophomore Day celebration. A win over the Albany Tech Lady Titans will give Lady Jets head coach James Frey his first undefeated conference season at SGTC and the Lady Jets their second unblemished GCAA record in the history of the program.
As the GCAA conference champions for 2018 – 2109, the Lady Jets will host the Region XVII Tournament semi-final and final games on March 1st and 2nd. The Lady Jets will face the fourth-ranked team at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1st. Albany Tech is currently in fourth place in the conference with an 8 – 9 GCAA record. Georgia Highlands is still in second place with a 13 – 4 record and Central Georgia Tech is third at 11 – 6. Andrew is ranked fifth, East Georgia is sixth, and South Crescent is in seventh place.
