Lady Jets remain undefeated, Jets are now 1 – 2

The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets are still undefeated on the 2017 – 2018 season and are 1-0 and tied for first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) after defeating Albany Tech 63 – 47 in Albany recently. The Lady Jets are currently ranked 13th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 women’s basketball standings.
The Jets are currently 1- 2 on the season. They dropped an 85 – 57 decision to Eastern Florida State College this past weekend in the TCC Veterans Classic in Tallahassee, Florida. The second game of the tournament against Tallahassee Community College was cancelled on Saturday due to severe weather.
In the GCAA match-up against Albany Tech, the Lady Jets jumped out to a 13 – 8 lead at the end of the first quarter and then continued to expand that lead at the half with the score, 29 – 13. Albany Tech rallied in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Jets 15 – 11. The Lady Jets rallied in the fourth to score 23 points and hold Albany Tech to 19 points to clinch the 63 – 47 victory.
“We did not play well,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We are continuing to make too many turnovers and we are not shooting the ball well. We did win, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
Sophomore forward Houlfat Manhouchiza from Nice, France led the Lady Jets in scoring with 21 points and also had 12 rebounds. Alyssa Nieves, a freshman guard from Tampa, FL, was the only other Lady Jet in double-digits with 15 points. Freshman forward Ricka Jackson and sophomore guard Dakata Toney both tossed in seven points each and Bigue Sarr, the freshman center from Kaolack, Senegal, added six points. Freshman Cedega James, Sophomore Esther Adenike, and freshman Fatou Pouye, each had two points and Sceret Ethridge closed out the scoring with one point.
The Lady Jets will host Atlanta Metro in a conference game on Wednesday, November 15th at 5:30 p.m. in the SGTC Hangar and then will travel to Tampa, FL for match-ups with St. Petersburg College and Hillsborough Community College on November 18th and 19th. They also travel to Swainsboro on November 22nd for a GCAA match-up against East Georgia State College. The Lady Jets will be back home on November 25th and 26th hosting the Lady Jets Thanksgiving Classic. They play Motlow State at 4 p.m. on November 25th and Wallace State at 4 p.m. on November 26th.
The Jets opened the season with a win but have since dropped back-to-back losses. They fell to 1 – 2 on the season after falling to Eastern Florida State College 85 – 57 in the TCC Veterans Classic in Tallahassee, FL.
The Jets fell behind 42 – 25 at the end of the first half and rallied in the second half to score 32 points to Eastern Florida’s 43, but that still left them trailing by 28 points at the end of the final buzzer.
Sophomore guard Rico Simmons led the Jets in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore guard Dawan Bass from Baltimore, MD accounted for 12 points and Marquel Wiggins, the sophomore forward from Oglethorpe, was the only other Jet in double-digits with 11 points. Sophomore Mike Boone added eight points, freshman guard Monte Greene had six points and then freshmen Sam Matice, Adonis Green, and Dominique Walker closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Jets have the opportunity to improve on their record this weekend when they host the Region 17/10 Bash in the Hangar on the Americus campus. The Jets will play Louisburg at 7:30 p.m. on November 17th and then face Cape Fear at 3 p.m. on November 18th. They will travel to Ocala, Florida on November 24th and 25th for the Central Florida Thanksgiving Classic. They play St. Petersburg on November 24th and Central Florida on November 25th. Both games are at 6 p.m.
