SWAINSBORO, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets overcame a seven-point half-time deficit to upset East Georgia 71 – 69 in the first Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) match-up this season and move to first place in the overall GCAA standings.
Sophomore transfer DeVante Foster, a 6’ 9” forward from Stockbridge, Georgia, was fouled in the final seconds of the game and went to the free throw line to sink the shots and lift the Jets to the 71 – 69 victory.
“This was a big win for us,” said South Georgia Technical College Jets head coach Travis Garrett. “The team did what they had to do to win on the road.” The Jets are now in first place in GCAA with a 1 – 0 record and are 6 – 5 overall. This is their second consecutive victory.
Sophomore forward Marquel Wiggins from Oglethorpe, GA, was the leading scorer for the Jets. He had a total of 19 points and eight rebounds. The only other Jet in double-digits was freshman forward Dominique Walker from Brunswick. He came off the bench and scored 14 points in 12 minutes of playing time. He also had three rebounds.
Sophomore transfer Dawan Bass, a 6’ 4” guard from Baltimore, MD, and freshman Durand Green, a 5’ 9” guard from Brunswick both accounted for nine points. Emshuan Offord, a sophomore from Albany, scored five points and then Rico Simmons, Mike Boone, and Adonis Green closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Jets and the Lady Jets will both play at home on Saturday, December 16th. The Lady Jets open with a 2 p.m. game against Santa Fe College. The Jets will follow at 4 p.m. with a match-up against Coastal Alabama – Monroeville.
The two teams will break for Christmas after that but will come back and host Holiday Classics at the end of December. The Jets Holiday Classic will kick off at 12 noon with a game between St. Petersburg vs. Wallace State on Friday, December 29th. The Jets will follow at 2 p.m. and play Wake Tech.
The Lady Jets Classic follows at 4 p.m. with Gulf Coast playing Shelton State, Eastern Florida versus Georgia Highlands at 6 p.m. and the Lady Jets facing Cape Fear in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, December 30th, the men’s classic opens at 12 noon with Wake Tech vs. Wallace State, followed by the Jets hosting St. Petersburg at 2 p.m. In the women’s half, Cape Fear will play Georgia Highlands at 4 p.m., Eastern Florida will face off with Shelton State at 6 p.m. and the Lady Jets will face the top ranked team in the nation, Gulf Coast at 8 p.m.
The women’s tournament will continue through Sunday, December 31st. Cape Fear will play Shelton State at 1 p.m. and then the Lady Jets will close out with Eastern Florida at 3 p.m.
