SGTC Lady Jets remain unbeaten in GCAA Conference play

Macon, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets moved to 2 – 0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference and remained in the top spot after securing a 93 – 55 decision over the Central Georgia Technical College Lady Titans in Macon as part of a double-header Wednesday. The win moved Lady Jets head coach Jason Carpenter and his team to 11 – 5 overall.
The Jets continued to struggle. They fell 76 – 61 to the Central Georgia Tech Titans in the second half of the double-header in Macon. This was their first GCAA conference game this season. The Jets did pick up an extra win recently when Gulf Coast Community College was forced to forfeit a 95 – 47 win on December 30 against the Jets. The Jets are now 2 – 13 on the season and 0 – 1 in the conference.
The Lady Jets trailed 20 – 19 at the end of the first quarter but managed to go into the half with a 41 – 36 lead. In the second half, the Lady Jets physically overpowered the Lady Titans and outscored them 52 – 19 to take the impressive 93 – 55 conference decision.
Freshman guard Jamiah Gregory from Marietta, GA, led the Lady Jets in scoring with 20 points. Four other Lady Jets joined her in double-digits with freshman guard Stephie Salumu from Belgium close behind with 17 points. Sophomore Enola Papin and freshman Kaiya Carter both tossed in 15 points each and sophomore Mio Sakano closed out the double-digit scoring with 14 points.
Freshman center Mariia Ignatchenko came away with five points, Maria Favero added four points and Duily Silva tossed in three points but led the team in rebounding with 11.
The Lady Jets are tops in the GCAA at 2 – 0 followed by Central Georgia Tech with a 1- 1 record. East Georgia and Andrew College have not started their conference play yet and Albany Tech and Southern Crescent are both 0 – 1.
In the men’s contest, the Jets went into the half down, 35 – 31. Central Georgia Tech stretched that four-point lead into a 76 – 61 conference victory with a strong second half effort. The Jets were only 3 of 12 from the three-point line and hit only 12 of 25 of their free throws. Overall, their field goal percentage was 45.1% only making 23 of 51 attempts. They also committed 24 turnovers in 40-minutes. Central Georgia Tech hit 10 of 28 attempts from the three-point line and 14 of their 19 free throws.
Sophomore guard Vaughn Prosser of Australia was the top scorer for the Jets with 15 points. Freshman center Matija Vucic was the only other Jet in double-figures and he had 10 points. He also had seven rebounds.
Freshman forward Hendrens Bartelus of Florida accounted for nine points, Aiden Fitzgerald and Daryl Bod both tossed in eight points. Bod was the leading rebounder with eight. Jalexs Ewing came away with seven points and Matt Mbole closed out the scoring with four points.
The Lady Jets game against East Georgia State College on Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m. in the Hangar on the Americus campus has been rescheduled due to weather concerns. Both teams will play at home on Wednesday, January 15 in a double-header beginning at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Lady Jets will play Central Georgia Tech again and the Jets will take on South Georgia State College of Waycross. South Georgia State is currently an honorable mention in the NJCAA national rankings.
Both SGTC teams will play at home on Saturday, January 18th. The Lady Jets open the double-header at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m. They both face East Georgia State College.
