South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, was selected as a member of the All-American Honorable Mention squad for 2019 by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.
Nieves helped lead the 2018-2019 Lady Jets to their third consecutive NJCAA National Tournament appearance in Lubbock, Texas. The Lady Jets finished the season with a 30 – 4 overall record, which is the best overall record for a men’s or women’s Jets team.
“The Lady Jets have won 30 games twice before but this is the least amount of losses that we have had in a single season,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey who attributed the successful season to a well-balanced team that included the Lady Jets newest All-American honorable mention Alyssa Nieves.
“We are so proud of Alyssa. This is well deserved.” said Coach Frey. “She has had a tremendous season and she will be making a decision about where she plans to continue her career as a student-athlete in the next few weeks. She has been tremendous for us these past two years and she is going to be hard to replace.”
Nieves, who is 5’ 7”, set two records for the Lady Jets this past season. She set a new school record for the most points scored in a single game with 41 points and then she also set the Lady Jets new record for the most three-pointers in a single game. She was 11 of 17 from the three-point line. She also led the Lady Jets to a 109 – 67 victory over the Andrew College Lady Tigers in that contest.
For the season, Nieves averaged 15.1 points per game to lead the Lady Jets in overall scoring. She started and played in 30 games for the Lady Jets in 2018-2019 and averaged being on the court 24.5 minutes each 40-minute game. She hit 30 percent of her three-point shots and 43% from the field. She was also an 80 percent free throw shooter.
Other honors that she has received this year include: GCAA first team All-Conference player, GCAA All-Academic Team, and MVP of the District J Championship game.
Nieves joins an elite group of South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets to be singled out for All-American honors. She is the fifth player under South Georgia Technical College head coach James Frey to be recognized on the national stage. Esther Adenike was tapped to be a first-team All-American in 2018, Angela “Angie” Thompkins was selected as a 2016 NJCAA first team All-American. TaQuanda Mike from Savannah, who played for the Lady Jets in 2014 and 2015 was an NJCAA All-American honorable mention and Shamekia “Polly” Murray from the 2013 – 2014 Lady Jets was a second team All-American for SGTC. The other two SGTC Lady Jets players to earn All-American honors were Shontae McCall, a first team All-American in 2012 under former Lady Jets head coach Brandon Harrell and Alice Holmes who played for Brandon Harrell in 2007 – 2008. She was the first Lady Jet to earn All-American honors and she was listed on the second team.
