Three South Georgia Tech Jets named to 2017-2018 Division I GCAA All-Conference teams

The South Georgia Technical College Jets had three players named to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I men’s basketball 2017 – 2018 All Region teams.
Sophomore forward Marquel Wiggins of Oglethorpe, Georgia, was selected as a first team All-Region player. The 6’ 6” player is averaging 15.7 points per game and is the Jets leading rebounder with an average of 9.1 per game. He has started in 26 games this season for the Jets and played in all 29.
In addition to Wiggins, South Georgia Tech’s sophomore guard Rico Simmons was named to the GCAA second team All-Region squad and sophomore guard Dawan Bass was named to the All-Defensive team and was an honorable mention for All-Region.
Simmons, who was the GCAA Freshman of the Year in 2015, sat out the 2016 – 2017 season. The 5’ 9” guard is from Wilkinson County, GA. He returned for the 2017 – 2018 season and led the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game. He is the team’s best free throw shooter with an 83.3% success rate from the foul line. He averages 3.9 rebounds per game, 5.6 assists and 2.3 steals each game. He started all 29 games this season for the Jets.
Dawan Bass, the 6’ 4” sophomore from Baltimore, MD, does a good job defensively for the Jets but he is also the third leading scorer with an average of 13.1 points per game. He also averages 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
The top-ranked GCAA Georgia Highland’s Coach Phil Gaffney was nominated as the Coach of the Year and Michael Laster of Central Georgia Technical College was selected as the Player of the Year. Central Georgia Tech is ranked second behind Georgia Highlands in the end of the season standings with South Georgia State and South Georgia Technical College in third and fourth place. South Georgia State’s Tracy Hector, Jr., was the Defensive Player of the Year and Jion Owens of Andrew College was the Freshman of the Year.
