South Georgia Technical College recently held an advisory committee meeting for its Cosmetology and Nail Technology programs on the Americus campus.
Cosmetology instructor Dorothea Lusane-McKenzie and Nail Technology instructor Jessakeetha Maddox met with industry representatives, students, and SGTC administrators to review the programs and discuss current trends, workforce expectations, and ways to continue preparing students for careers in the beauty industry.
Advisory committee meetings provide SGTC instructors with input from professionals working in the field and help ensure programs remain responsive to changes in industry practices, techniques, equipment, and employer expectations. Committee members also provide insight into career opportunities and the skills students need as they enter the workforce.
Industry representatives attending the meeting were Tracy Finch of Dorothea’s Beauty Salon; Jasmine Dean of The Braiding Dynasty Hair Salon; Mary Aycock of Capelli Salon & Spa in Albany; Martha Kate Bruce of KB’s Beauty Salon; Maryann Reiselbara of Restore Foot & Nail; and Viveca Jones of LillyK & Co. in Buena Vista.
Students attending were Heather Turner, Cosmetology, and Deondrea Watts, Nail Technology.
SGTC representatives attending were Emily Monts, Nail Tech instructor; Melissa Hollis, Receiving and Distribution Manager; Brett Murray, Academic Dean; and Katrice Martin, Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Grants Coordinator.
Feedback from advisory committee members helps SGTC evaluate its Cosmetology and Nail Technology programs and maintain training that reflects current professional standards while preparing students for employment and entrepreneurship in the beauty industry.
