South Georgia Technical College recently hosted a mental health workshop at the Crisp County Center led by D.W. Persall, Media & Library Services Specialist.
The workshop focused on depression and was designed to help students better understand common signs, symptoms, and types of depressive disorders, as well as the importance of seeking help when needed.
Persall began by discussing depression as a mental health condition that can involve persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, poor concentration, and feelings of guilt or low self-worth. Mental Health, Depression
The presentation covered several forms of depression and related conditions, including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and seasonal affective disorder. Students also learned about symptoms that can affect daily life, school, work, relationships, and overall well-being.
Persall discussed ways individuals can support their mental health through habits such as maintaining a balanced diet, getting regular physical activity and adequate sleep, managing stress, maintaining social connections, and seeking psychological support when needed. The presentation also emphasized that treatment options can include counseling, medication, and other forms of professional care depending on the condition and individual needs.
The workshop encouraged students to recognize when changes in mood, energy, sleep, concentration, or interest in activities may warrant attention and to understand that depression is treatable.
Persall closed the presentation by stressing the importance of getting help rather than ignoring persistent symptoms, particularly when depression begins to interfere with everyday life.
The workshop was part of SGTC’s ongoing efforts to provide students with information and resources that support both academic success and overall well-being.
