The South Georgia Technical College Law Enforcement Academy recently hosted Leadership in Public Safety: Theory & Practice, an intensive leadership development course designed to help current and aspiring public safety professionals strengthen their leadership skills and better serve their agencies and communities.

The course was led by Law Enforcement Academy Director James Mitchell and Instructor Joshua Blake. Rather than focusing solely on supervisory roles or rank, the program emphasized developing the mindset, character, and practical skills needed to lead effectively at every level of public safety.

Participants represented several law enforcement agencies from the area, including Davie Rueda Fierros and Markell Stone of the Americus Police Department; Latasha Ingram and Tyler Turner of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office; Ernest Stephens of the Dougherty County Police Department; and Johnathan "Chase" McNeese of the Dooly County Sheriff's Office.

Throughout the course, participants explored leadership theories and their application in public safety, communication and team building, ethical decision-making, conflict resolution, organizational culture, mentorship, and leading through change. They also completed self-assessments to better understand their individual leadership styles and developed personal leadership plans for continued professional growth.

Instruction combined classroom discussion with case studies, group exercises, presentations, and scenario-based activities designed to help participants apply leadership concepts to real-world situations they may encounter in their agencies.

The course emphasized that effective leadership is a continuous process of learning, growth, and service. Participants left with practical tools they can immediately implement to strengthen their teams, foster positive organizational culture, and better serve their communities.
