South Georgia Technical College’s Criminal Justice program recently welcomed representatives from the Montezuma Police Department to speak with students about gangs and juvenile crime trends in the region.
Corporal Chippy Guerra, a gang investigator, along with Corporal David Jennings and Corporal Jalen Johnson, visited Teresa McCook’s Juvenile Justice class to share their knowledge and real-world experiences. The officers discussed current gang activity, warning signs, and the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing juvenile crime in the area.
The visit was especially meaningful for SGTC, as both Corporal Guerra and Corporal Johnson are graduates of the college’s Criminal Justice program and Law Enforcement Academy. Their return to campus gave current students a valuable opportunity to hear directly from professionals who once sat in the same classrooms.
McCook expressed appreciation to Chief Finch and the Montezuma Police Department for their continued support and willingness to engage with students. She also highlighted the significance of having former students return to speak.
“I love having former students come back and share their experiences,” McCook said. “Seeing how far Cpl. Guerra has come in his career makes me incredibly proud.”
Guerra’s journey is one of growth and dedication. He began his studies at SGTC while still in high school through the Dual Enrollment program and has since gone on to earn his bachelor’s degree and is currently pursuing his master’s degree.
The session provided students with up-to-date information on gang characteristics and activity, while also reinforcing the importance of education and career development in the criminal justice field.
