Hairstyling isn’t a competition – that is until South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) cosmetology instructor, Dorothea Lusane-McKenzie, holds an annual hairstyling competition for her cosmetology students on the college’s Americus campus.

Codi Dozier of Ellaville recently won the class’ once-yearly hairstyling competition for her work on model Lindsey Dozier’s hair. Tyona Royal of Ellaville (model DeKendra Royal) came in second, and Ashley Stanford of Americus (model Sherry Stanford) placed third in the competition. Each of the top three contestants received an engraved commemorative plaque as an award.

The SGTC annual hairstyling competition gives the college’s cosmetology students the opportunity to show off the skills they learned in the classroom, show off their personal style and compete for top recognition among their classmates.

The students were able to pick their models and choose a hairstyle that showcased their creativity and innovation. Judges for the competition, which included Danielle McSpadden of Shear Reflections LLC in Americus, Leah Wright of Shear Elegance in Americus and Tori Purvis of Capelli Salon and Spa of Albany, used the international 30-point rating system to select the winners.

The fourth, fifth and sixth place winners also won a certificate for their accomplishment, and included Marleen Cortez of Leesburg (model Sofia Cortez), Sidney Daniel of Dawson (model Magan Schofill), and Alisa Freeman of Atlanta (model Daphine Smalls), respectively.

Other student competitors and their models included: Shakira Jordan (model Katisha Wedges), Cloretha Mitchell (model Regina Powell), Tia Blanks (model Shanice Laster), Katelyn Burgess (model Denisha Mann), Melissa Alejo (model Christine Lopez) and Jessica Thompson (model Elise Betrus).

McKenzie, along with instructor trainee Mikeeshia Towns, nail technician instructor Airel Rolle and instructor trainee Samantha Willis, coordinated the competition for the students.
