Jets, Lady Jets sweep GCAA Conference opponents
The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets both captured wins over their Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) opponents in a double-header in the Hangar Saturday. The Lady Jets easily overpowered the East Georgia College Bobcats, 77 – 60, and the Jets managed to upset the top ranked Georgia Highlands Chargers 106 – 88 in overtime.
The Lady Jets are currently in second place behind Georgia Highlands in the GCAA with a 7 – 2 record and they are 18 – 4 overall. The Jets knocked over the previously unbeaten Georgia Highlands Chargers to move to 3 – 3 in the conference and 11 – 9 overall. Despite the win, they are currently in fifth place in the conference.
The Lady Jets secured their seventh straight win Saturday behind the strong shooting of freshman forward Alexia Dizeko, freshman guard Luana Leite, and sophomore shooting guard Kamiya Hollingshed. Dizeko led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds for an impressive double-double for the second game in a row. She also had three assists and two steals.
Kamiya Hollingshed hit five three-pointers to finish the night with 15 points and Luana Leite tied that point production hitting six of 12 from the field and three free throws. Hollingshed pulled down three rebounds, while Leite came away with four rebounds, five assists and one steal on the night.
Freshman Fanta Gasama scored six points, Laurie Calixte had five and then Maikya Simmons, Mame Thiaw, and Camryn James accounted for four points each. Loes Rozing closed out the scoring with three points.
The Lady Jets were up by 12 points at the end of the first quarter, 22 – 10. They widened that lead to 41 – 22 at the half and then coasted on to the 77 – 60 victory. Following that impressive win, the Jets came on the court to make it 2 – 0 on the day for the South Georgia Tech fans.
The Jets started off strong and were up 45 – 35 at the end of the first half. Georgia Highlands came on strong in the second half to tie the game 86 – 86 at the end of the regulation game. The Jets had a chance to put the game away in regulation but missed free throw opportunities and a last second three-point shot by Georgia Highlands forced the game into overtime.

Sophomore guard Will Johnson led the Jets in scoring with 26 points and seven rebounds on the night. Malik Battle was close behind with 24 points, two rebounds and five assists. Three other Jets were in double-digits with Justice Hayes walking away with 15 points and six rebounds and Marvin McGhee contributing 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals before fouling out late in the second half.
Sophomore center Jalen Reynolds had a double-double on the night with 11 points and 14 rebounds. He also had four assists and two blocked shots. Bryce Turner scored eight points for the Jets and had eight rebounds, Nathan Wilson tossed in six points and had three rebounds. Kallin Fonseca closed out the scoring with three points and two rebounds.
Both the Jets and Lady Jets will be on the road this week with the Lady Jets traveling to Macon to take on Central Georgia Tech on Tuesday, January 25th at 5:30 p.m. and the Jets traveling to Cuthbert to play Andrew College on Wednesday, January 26th at 7 p.m.
The two teams will return home for another double-header on Saturday, January 29th in the Hangar. The Lady Jets open with Andrew College at 1 p.m. and the Jets follow up with East Georgia at 3 p.m.
