     Kelly Northern of Oglethorpe has been hired as a Practical Nursing Instructor for the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Crisp County Center, announced SGTC President Dr. John Watford.  She will report to SGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs Julie Partain and Crisp County Center Academic Dean Michelle McGowan.

   Northern is a graduate of Kaplan University in Johnston, IA with an Associate of Science in Nursing.  She also was a student at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA and Centerville, IA.  In addition to her nursing degree, she has Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS), CPR/AED Certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification.  She has been a Registered Nurse since 2012 and has been a Licensed Practical Nurse since 1986.  She was also an EMT-Paramedic for 13 years.

   She was employed at the Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville, GA, as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department prior to joining South Georgia Tech.  She worked as a Wound Care Registered Nurse in Montezuma, and a Registered Nurse in Endoscopy for Piedmont Hospital in Columbus.  Prior to coming to Georgia, she worked as a Travel Registered Nurse for Medical Solutions in Omaha, NE; as an Outpatient Surgery Registered Nurse in Des Moines, IA; a Hospice Registered Nurse Care Manager with Iowa Hospice in West Des Moines, IA; and as a Medical/Surgical Nurse for Clark County Hospital in Osceola, IA.

   Northern also worked as an LPN at the Manor Care Health Services in West Des Moines, IA, and as an LPN/Paramedic at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, IA.  Her first LPN position was with Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, IA as an LPN Charge Nurse.

     “We are very pleased that Kelly Northern has joined the South Georgia Technical College faculty as a full-time instructor,” said President Watford.  “She has a tremendous amount of experience and expertise.  We believe she will be an outstanding addition to our full-time faculty.”

   Northern will be performing the teaching duties of the Practical Nursing program courses which include classroom and clinical instruction.  She will also be asked to prepare instructional materials, provide written feedback on student performance, assess student performance and assign grades, participate in program and college committees and be involved in professional activities/organizations.  She will be based primarily on the Cordele campus but will travel to the Americus campus and clinical sites as needed.

     South Georgia Technical College is currently accepting application for Summer Semester, which begins May 22.  Registration is set for May 20th.  Classes end July 28 and students receive the week of July 30 – July 4th as summer break.
