South Georgia Technical College faculty and staff recently welcomed students from Schley County Middle School for a tour of SGTC’s program areas on the Americus campus. Schley County Middle School Principal Todd West wanted students to see firsthand the types of Move On When Ready (MOWR) opportunities that were available to them once they entered high school, as well as the other programs of study offered by SGTC. MOWR allows high school students to take college level courses at South Georgia Tech while still enrolled in high school, and they can receive a diploma or associate degree from SGTC by the time they graduate from high school.

High School Coordinator Vickie Austin, High School Initiatives Specialists Brittny Wright and Beth Brooks, and Student Affairs Assistant Kierra Sparks led four groups of middle school students on a tour of the campus. The program areas they visited and their respective instructors included: Cosmetology, Dorothea Lusane-McKenzie; Early Childhood Care and Education, Jaye Cripe; Heavy Equipment Dealers Service Technology, Rick Davis; Welding and Joining Technology, Ted Eschmann; Practical Nursing, Jennifer Childs and Debra Smith; Air Conditioning Technology; Medical Assisting, Diana Skipper; Glynn Cobb; and Diesel Equipment Technology, Craig Kelly.

The Move On When Ready program is operated in partnership with local school systems. Students must meet requirements of their local high school system to establish eligibility to participate in any MOWR program with SGTC. Degree level core classes will transfer to any University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia college or university in addition to many other colleges/universities outside of the state of Georgia. College credits taken through the MOWR program do not count against HOPE Scholarship or HOPE Grant hours after graduation from high school, and college credits do count toward new high school rigor requirements and HOPE Scholarship rigor requirements. Tuition and textbooks are totally covered through the MOWR program, and South Georgia Tech exempts all student fees for high school students participating in MOWR – which means there are no out of pocket expenses to attend South GA Tech while in high school.
