South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Career Services recently hosted a financial literacy workshop aimed at empowering students with essential money management and professional development skills. The event was held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on SGTC’s Americus campus.

Cynthia Carter, Director of Career Services, led the initiative, emphasizing the importance of early financial education. “Money management skills empower young adults to take control of their financial future,” Carter said. “Financial decisions made during early adulthood can have lifelong consequences.”

The workshop featured guest speaker Wallace Keese of Fort Valley State University, who engaged students and faculty in a discussion on budgeting, responsible credit card usage, credit maintenance, and distinguishing between wants and needs. Keese stressed that developing good financial habits early can help students avoid debt and build a secure financial future.

Students participated in both pre- and post-tests during the session, which boosted engagement and helped measure their learning outcomes.

In addition to financial literacy, the workshop included a session on professional readiness. Topics included resume writing, soft skills development, dressing for success, and the importance of body language and verbal communication in interviews. Students also practiced their “elevator pitch”—a brief, confident self-introduction designed to leave a strong first impression.
