SGTC Jets and Lady Jets open 2018 -2019 basketball season

The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets opened the 2018 -2019 basketball season on the road recently and both teams split decisions in their first two outings. The Lady Jets fell 68 – 66 to Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL, but then bounced back to post a 71 – 41 win over the College of Central Florida the next day in Ocala, Florida. The Jets are also 1 – 1. They opened with an impressive 90 – 87 overtime win against Roane State Community College in the Roane State Classic Tournament in Harriman, TN. But they came up short in their second match-up, 65 – 61 against Cleveland State Community College in that same tournament.
Sophomore forward Fatou Pouye from Kaolack, Senegal led the Lady Jets in scoring in the loss to Santa Fe College with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ricka Jackson from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was the only other Lady Jets in double-figures in that contest with 14 points.
The Lady Jets were up 35 – 32 at the end of the first half and maintained a lead through the third quarter. Santa Fe College outscored the Lady Jets 19 – 12 in the fourth quarter to secure the 68 – 66 victory. The Lady Jets hit 44% of their shots from the field, were eight of 15 from the three-point line and made eight of their 10 free throws.
After that narrow defeat the Lady Jets rallied to a 71 – 41 victor over the College of Central Florida to move to 1 – 1 overall. Sophomore center Bigue Sarr was the top scorer for the Lady Jets in this contest with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves was close behind with 17 points and then Fatou Pouye posted 11 points and nine rebounds to help the Lady Jets coast to their first win of the regular season.
While the Lady Jets were opening in Florida, the South Georgia Technical College Jets traveled in the opposite direction to Harriman, TN for a tournament. Sophomore forward Adonis Green from Stockbridge put on a show in that opening 90 – 87 overtime win by scoring 36 points. He was the only starter for the Jets in double-figures but freshman reserve guard Jaylan McKinney and sophomore center Sam Matice both came up with 12 points each. Matice also pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Jets in that stat.
South Georgia Tech was trailing 38 – 37 at the end of the first half but came back and tied the game at 73 – 73 in the second half to push the game into over-time. The Jets outscored Roane State 17 – 14 in the overtime period to take the 90 – 87 victory.
After that exciting opening win, the Jets fell to the Cleveland State Cougars the next night, 65 – 61. Freshman guard Justin Johnson from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, led the Jets in scoring with 13 points. He and freshman guard Dijon Brown, also from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, were the only two starters in double points. He came up with 10 points. Sophomore guard Durand Green came off the bench for the Jets in that match-up and added 11 points. Sam Matice led the Jets in rebounding with 10.
The Jets are on the road again this weekend as they travel to Ft. Myers, FL to participate in the Florida Southwestern Classic. They play Florida Southwestern at 7 p.m. Friday night and then match up against Broward College at 12 noon on Saturday.
The Lady Jets will host the Lady Jets Classic in the Hangar in Americus on Saturday and Sunday. They open up at 3 p.m. Saturday against Cape Fear and then meet Wallace State College at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Lady Jets have five straight games at home. On November 14th, the Lady Jets play East Georgia State College in their first GCAA conference contest at 5:30 p.m. They will then host Central Georgia Technical College at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th as part of a double-header. The Jets will play USC Salkahatchie at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 16th, as part of the Jets Classic Tournament and then will play Tallahassee Community College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 as part of the double-header that day.
The Lady Jets will have one more home game before Thanksgiving when they host Albany Technical College on Tuesday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m. in the Hangar.
