South Georgia Technical College’s Americus chapter of the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) student organization dominated competitions at the recent PBL South District Conference in Tifton – bringing home 13 top five awards in different categories. Six students competed in the events, which served as a regional trial-run to provide students with experience and feedback that they can incorporate at the state level competitive events.

First place awards were presented to: Yaneli Hernandez of DeSoto for Accounting Principles, Joseph Hawkins of Americus for Business Communications, Andrea Burton-Jackson of Americus for Business Decision-Making, Jasmin Tovar of Montezuma for Information Management, Shantelle Brito of Americus for Management Concepts and Microeconomics.

Second place awards went to: Jasmin Tovar for Business Communications, Jarrius Cladd of Americus for Human Resource Management, and Andrea Burton-Jackson for Information Management.

Other rewards were presented to: Jurrius Cladd (3rd place for Business Decision-Making), Yaneli Hernandez (4th place for Information Management) and Joseph Hawkins (4th place for Retail Management).

In addition to the individual awards, the team of Andrea Burton-Jackson and Jasmin Tovar won a 5th place award in the Battle of the Chapters competition.

“I am excited about the performance of the chapter,” said Dr. Andrea Oates, SGTC Academic Dean and PBL advisor. “They really embraces the preparation process, which is evident by their accomplishments.”

The chapter members will use what they learned at the South District Conference to compete with other students on the regional, state and national level in the summer.
