Stewart County high school students tour South Georgia Technical College

A group of nearly two dozen juniors and seniors from Stewart County High School in Lumpkin, Georgia, visited South Georgia Technical College in Americus recently to tour the college and learn more about the over 200 associate degree, diploma, and technical certificate of credit programs available.
Don Porter, a member of the South Georgia Technical College Board of Directors, is the local manager for Georgia Power and oversees Sumter, Schley, Stewart, Marion, and Webster Counties. He was visiting with the Stewart County Schools and urged them to bring their junior and seniors to South Georgia Technical College to visit the college campus and learn more about the Electrical Lineworker classes.
Patrick Harris, Engineering Supervisor with Georgia Power, talked with the group prior to their tour and gave them an overview of his job and encouraged them to find a career that they would enjoy. The students also got to tour the South Georgia Technical College Electrical Lineworker classroom and skills field. SGTC partners with Georgia Power and other utility companies to give individuals the opportunity to learn more about the electrical lineworker field.
South Georgia Technical College Vice President of Economic Development Wally Summers and Director of Business and Industry Services Paul Farr toured the students around the campus. The students visited the Griffin B. Bell Aerospace Technology building and learned about the Aviation Maintenance Technology, Avionics, and Aircraft Structural Technology programs. They also toured the Criminal Justice and Diesel buildings and the High Performance Motorsports, Caterpillar and John Deere labs. “There are jobs available for all of the programs that we teach. I hope you saw something today that inspired you to take the next step after high school and enroll in college. South Georgia Technical College is a great school and we have a 99% job placement rate for graduates,” said Summers.
Students can choose from over 200 associate degree, diploma, or technical certificate of credit programs at South Georgia Technical College. They can also enjoy the “Complete College Experience.” South Georgia Technical College is one of only two technical colleges in Georgia with on-campus housing. It also offers nationally ranked academic programs, student activities, and intercollegiate athletics.
