ATLANTA, GA – Three returning members from the nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College 2017 – 2018 Lady Jets women’s basketball tournament were invited to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Star showcase in Atlanta recently.
South Georgia Tech sophomore forward Bigue Sarr, a 6’ 3” center from Senegal, Ricka Jackson, a 5’ 10” sophomore forward from Ewa Beach, HI; and Alyssa Nieves, a 5’ 7” guard from Tampa, Florida, were the three players from South Georgia Technical College who were invited to participate. South Georgia Tech tied for the most players voted in to participate with three returning players.
The SGTC Lady Jets joined 40 of the top women’s junior college basketball players from this area. Over 100 coaches and scouts from major basketball programs across the nation were in Atlanta to scout the state’s top talent.
One of the purposes for the All-star showcase is to give the JUCO players exposure for the next level. “I want to go to the WNBA so I want to get some big big big schools to get some good looks,” said Bigue Sarr, sophomore post.
SGTC’s Ricka Jackson echoed that sentiment. “I hope to get more offers going into the season so they can look at me throughout the whole season.”
“Coach Frey and assistant coach, Kenzia Conyers, are both great coaches. They know what they’re talking about so they put us through what we need to go through to get us better. Hopefully, that’s going to get us looks from D1 colleges,” said sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves.
The Lady Jets finished the 2017 – 2018 season with a 29 – 6 overall record and were one of the top 16 teams in the NJCAA Division I women’s national tournament. Coach Frey is expecting great things from these three returnees in the 2018 – 2019 season.
