Dan Torbert nominated as SGTC’s Champion for Education

   South Georgia Technical College Foundation Trustee Daniel Lindsey Torbert was recognized as SGTC’s Champion for Education at the Chattahoochee-Flint RESA Champions for Education celebration held recently in the John M. Pope Center on the SGTC Americus campus.

   Approximately 25 individuals were selected by local school districts and partners of the Chattahoochee-Flint RESA to be recognized as the 2025 Champions for Education.  These individuals are often the unsung heroes whose invaluable support is vital to the betterment of our students’ education.

   South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford selected SGTC Foundation Trustee Dan Torbert of Americus as the SGTC Champion for Education for 2025.  “An electrician by trade, Dan Torbert supports all forms of education in his community by action and deed.  He has a special love for athletic programs and is a strong supporter of the SGTC Jets and Lady Jets and all area high schools.  Mr. Torbert has served on the SGTC Jets Booster Club and gives of himself to make sure that students enjoy the greatest experience possible for this time at the college,” explained Dr. Watford.

   Torbert is a 1972 graduate of Georgia Southwestern State University and is a charter member of the GSW Hurricane Club and remains a strong supporter of the University.  He is a lifetime member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, an honorary member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home as well as a trustee of the South Georgia Technical College Foundation Board.  His love for people and commitment to education as the means to realize a full and prosperous life are evident in his daily walk.

   Actor William Shatner presented Dan Torbert with the coveted VITA Award at the Washington DC National Press Club for his 1994 rescue of six children and two adult House Parents during the 1994 Flood at the Americus Methodist Children’s Home.

   “Those who know and love Dan Torbert, however recognize him as a hero on a daily basis for not just talking the talk but walking the walk,” said SGTC President Watford.  “South Georgia Technical College is proud to honor Daniel Lindsey Torbert, a true Champion for Education!”
