The Americus-Sumter County Hospital Authority has partnered with South Georgia Technical College to provide scholarship opportunities for its Licensed Practical Nursing, Medical Assisting, Heath Care Assistant, and Certified Nursing Assisting students.

“On behalf of the South Georgia Technical College, the South Georgia Technical College Foundation, our faculty and staff and most importantly our students, I want to thank you for this donation,” said South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford. “This will be a tremendous benefit to our students in the medical programs.”

Su Ann Bird, Vice President of Institutional Advancement for South Georgia Tech and Executive Director of the South Georgia Tech Foundation, also thanked the Americus-Sumter County Hospital Authority for their support of the medical programs and students from Sumter, Crisp, Macon, Marion, Schley, Taylor and Webster Counties.

“These scholarships will help students with tuition balances, uniforms, books, support to attend clinical experiences, licensing exam preparation and dorm expenses,” said Bird. “This scholarship may be the difference in whether or not a student is able to complete their program and enter the workforce. Thank you so much on behalf of the students that you will be helping.”

David Kitchens of the Americus-Sumter County Hospital Authority said that the purpose of these scholarships is to help provide a trained, skilled workforce for the medical community in the Americus and Sumter County area. “We would like to encourage the scholarship recipients to remain in the Americus area and work in this community,” explained Kitchens. “We have a great health care system and this scholarship will help ensure the continuation of a trained workforce for our doctor’s offices, the hospital, clinics, and nursing facilities.”

The South Georgia Technical College Foundation has already awarded two scholarships to students enrolled in the medical assisting programs and will be awarding additional scholarships Spring semester. The scholarships are awarded based on need, grades, and work ethics with input from instructors.
