Two brothers from Vienna, Georgia—Joshua and Luke Bartlett—are proving that a strong foundation in math and a supportive family can spark success in both the classroom and the workforce. Homeschooled by their mother, Heather Bartlett, a longtime wedding cake baker, the brothers developed independent thinking and a deep appreciation for learning early on.

Joshua Bartlett earned his diploma in Electrical Systems Technology from South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) in 2023 under instructor Jeff Sheppard. A former Student of Excellence winner, Joshua now works as a maintenance technician for Marvair in Cordele. His younger brother, Luke, is currently following in his footsteps, enrolled in the same program while working part-time as an electrician’s helper with Cook Electric.

The Bartletts have thrived in SGTC’s math courses, especially under instructor Rose Leggett. Luke shared that math came naturally to them and credited their homeschool experience for helping him find his academic stride. “Looking back, homeschool was for me,” he said. “Math came easy for us.”

Cynthia Carter, SGTC Career Services Director, encourages students not to fear math, describing it as the key to solving real-world problems. “Math is about understanding,” Carter said. “The only way to learn math is to do math.”

Both brothers are prime examples of how strong math skills, hands-on training, and the right support system can lead to success. With their father, Trevor Bartlett, serving as a lieutenant with the City of Cordele Fire Department for over two decades, the Bartlett family has built a legacy of service and hard work that continues at South Georgia Technical College.
