Diquita Mathis of Pinehurst was recently announced as the overall student of excellence for South Georgia Technical College in Americus. Mathis studies Criminal Justice and was nominated by her instructor, Teresa McCook. The Student of Excellence recognition for Mathis comes after she also won the honor of representing South Georgia Tech in the statewide Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) competition.

Each month, students from select divisions are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. The Student of Excellence is chosen based on a number of criteria, including grades, work ethics, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion.

McCook praised Mathis for her commitment and professional approach to her studies. “She’s just a joy to have in class,” McCook said, “and she encourages her classmates.”

In her acceptance remarks, Mathis thanked McCook and the college as well as her husband for his support. “This is a great opportunity,” she said. “I never thought that at age 40, I’d be coming back to school to further my education. I just want everyone to know you’re never too old to accomplish your goals.”
