Jets and Lady Jets sweep Andrew College in GCAA games

Cuthbert, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets swept Andrew College in a pair of Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) games Saturday.  The Lady Jets opened with an 86 – 65 victory and the Jets followed with an impressive 107 – 54 win over the Tigers in the second-half of the double-header.

  The 3 – 1 Lady Jets remained in second place in the GCAA behind unbeaten East Georgia State College (3- 0).  The Lady Jets are 8 – 11 overall.  The Jets moved into a tie for third place in the GCAA with a 3 – 2 record.  They are 7 – 12 overall.  Central Georgia Tech is currently first (5-0), South Georgia State is second (4-1), and Albany Tech and South Georgia Tech are tied for third place with identical 3 – 2 performances.

  In the opening half of the double-header, the Lady Jets jumped out to a narrow 15 – 11 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They stretched that lead to eight points by the end of the first half and were up 34 – 26.  The Lady Jets came back in the third quarter and outscored Andrew 22 – 14.  They continued to outscore the Lady Tigers in the fourth quarter and wound up with the 86 – 65 victory.

  Three Lady Jets were in double-digits in the matchup with sophomore Taja Bennett leading the team in scoring and rebounds with 34 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double day.  Sophomore guard Ja’Niya Broome was close behind with 29 points, six rebounds, five steals, and one assist.  Jada Jones was the only other Lady jet in double-digits and she had 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.

   Rounding out the scoring for the Lady jets was Candice Ganga, a freshman point guard, with seven points, Sarah Mellouk, a freshman guard, with three points, and Glory Kaine with two points.

   In the men’s game, the Jets were up 60 – 27 at the end of the first half and continued to outscore the Tigers in the second half to clinch the 107 – 54 victory.   Four Jets were in double-figures in that contest.  Jalexs Ewing led the team with 21 points and he was followed by Matt Mbole who added 15 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for a double-double.

   Guillaume Schoentgen followed with 13 points and then Reggie Cleveland came away with 11 points. Clark Mastin, Ilich Yacaman, and Jeremy Nixon each added nine points, Noa Istrefi and Frankie Raines both added six points, Ralfs Iesalieks had five and Marc Ferdy closed out the scoring with three points.

   The Jets will return to the court on Wednesday, January 28th with a 6 p.m. GCAA game at home against Georgia Highlands College. The Lady Jets will host Southern Crescent Technical College at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 2.  The Jets will host Gordon State College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. while the Lady Jets travel to Macon on Saturday, February 7th for a 1 p.m. game with the Central Georgia Technical College Lady Titans.
