Jets and Lady Jets sweep Chattahoochee Valley Community College
Phenix City, AL – The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets traveled to Phenix City, AL, and took narrow victories over Chattahoochee Valley Community College in a double-header. The Lady Jets opened with a 67 – 59 win to move to 5 – 2 and the Jets hung on to win 61 – 57 and move to 5 – 5 on the season.
“It was good to get two wins,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach Jason Carpenter. “Anytime you can go on the road and come back with a victory, it is a good day.” This is the second time the Jets and Lady Jets have secured wins against Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Earlier this season, the Lady Jets captured a 72 – 66 victory and the Jets won, 73 – 70.
The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets and the Chattahoochee Valley Community College Lady Pirates were tied at 16 – 16 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Jets were able to outscore them 16 – 9 in the second quarter to pull ahead 32 – 23 at the half.
Chattahoochee Valley came out strong in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Jets 21 – 18 to close the gap to 53 – 45 by the end of the third period. SGTC rallied in the fourth quarter and posted 17 points versus Chattahoochee Valley’s 13 to walk away with the 67 – 59 victory.
Four of the Lady Jets five starters were in double-digits with sophomore center Maeva Fotsa leading the way with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore guard Isabel de Souza Bueno followed with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Sophomore guard Vera Gunaydin was four of nine from the three-point line to wind up with 14 points. She also had 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Mio Sakano, a freshman guard, closed out the double-digit scoring with 13 points. Enola Papin and Greta Carollo were the only other two Lady Jets to score and they had five and two points respectively.
The Lady Jets will travel to Tuscaloosa, AL on December 15and 16 for the Shelton State Classic. They play Shelton State at 6 p.m. CST on December 15 and Chipola at 12 noon CST on December 16. They return home for the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 28 – 30. They play Snow College at 6 p.m. on December 28, Gulf Coast at 6 p.m. on December 29, and St. Petersburg College at 6 p.m. December 30.
After the Lady Jets win, the Jets came out and had a strong second half to capture a narrow 61 – 57 win over the Chattahoochee Valley Community College and former Jets head coach Douglas Byrd. Chattahoochee was up 27 – 24 at the end of the first half, but the Jets rallied and outscored them 37 – 30 in the second half to take the 61 – 57 decision.
Sophomore guard Deonte Williams led the Jets in scoring with 17 points. He also had seven rebounds, seven assists and a steal. Camarion Johnson, a freshman guard, was the only other Jet in double digits with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and one steal.
Ryan Djoussa, a sophomore forward, and Jafeth Martinez, a freshman forward, both contributed seven points, Jaylen Woods and Kameron Forman added five points each, and Harley Kent came away with four points. Mohand Ammad and Justin Evans closed out the scoring with three and two points each.
The Jets will travel to USC Salkehatchie in Waltersboro, SC on December 19 at 3 p.m. and that will finish them up until January. They are scheduled to travel to Coastal Alabama on January 6 at 3 p.m.
