Jets and Lady Jets sweep Metro Atlanta in GCAA contests

ATLANTA, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets continued to capture victories in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association recently when they traveled to Atlanta Metropolitan College in Atlanta and walked away with big wins.
The Lady Jets defeated the Atlanta Metropolitan Lady Trailblazers 74 – 57 to capture their seventh straight victory and remain in first place in the GCAA with a 7 – 0 conference record and a 19 – 3 overall record. They are also currently ranked 24th in the nation.
The Jets secured their second consecutive GCAA conference win in an impressive 87 – 56 win over the Atlanta Metro Trailblazers. The Jets are now 4 – 3 in the conference and 10 – 11 overall. They are also currently ranked third in the GCAA behind the unbeaten Georgia Highlands College with an 8 – 0 record and the Central Georgia Tech squad which is 5 – 1 in the GCAA.
Both South Georgia Technical College coaches were pleased with the overall performances of their teams. “We did a good job of executing,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “I thought the men played very good and I was pleased with the Lady Jets. Our starting five players scored a total of 57 points which equaled their entire score and the starters played only about half of the game.”
Sophomore guard Shaineequah Fluellyn started for the Lady Jets and was the leading scorer with 18 points. Freshman forward Esther Adenike stepped up and had a big game with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kanna Suzuki was the only other Lady Jet in double-figures and she had 11 points, six assists, and three steals. Sophomore Camille Coleman added nine points, five rebounds, two assists and three streals. Houlfat Mahouchize had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot and Desiree Corbin added seven points and 17 rebounds, one assist, two steals and four blocked shots.
Freshman guard Trakyra Kidd came off the bench to add five points and sophomore Madison Cameron scored four points.
After the Lady Jets took care of the Lady Trailblazers, the Jets came out jumped out to a 34 – 24 lead by the end of the first half and then rallied in the second half to outscore the Trailblazers 53 – 32 to coast to the 87 – 56 victory.
Freshman guard Jalen Thomas led the team in scoring with 17 points and he was followed by sophomore guard Pat Welch who added 13 points and was three of nine from the three point line. Sophomore forward Andre Kennedy had 12 points and Bobby Jackson, a sophomore forward closed out the double-digit scoring with 11 points. Marguel Wiggins added seven points and then Ed Jones, Trevon Teague, Jamon Moore, and Mike Boone all had six points each.
Both teams will be on the road Wednesday to take on GCAA opponents. The Lady Jets will travel to Cuthbert to face the eighth place Andrew College women’s team. Andrew is 1 – 6 in the GCAA. They play at 5:30. That same night the Jets travel to Waycross to face South Georgia College. South Georgia is currently fourth in the GCAA behind the Jets. That game is 7 p.m.
The two will then travel to Macon for a matchup with Central Georgia Tech on Saturday, February 4th in a conference double-header. The Lady Jets open at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m. The two teams will travel to Marietta on February 8th for a double-header against Chattahoochee Tech at 5:30 and 7:30.
After those back to back road games, the Jets and Lady Jets return home to host Georgia Highlands on Saturday, February 11th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Georgia Highlands men’s team is currently in first place and the women’s Georgia Highlands squad is in second place behind the Lady Jets.
