South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Marketing Management student Kacey Dixon of Montezuma was recently named the Student of Excellence for November.  Dixon and four other outstanding students were recognized as the top students in their respective program areas and then Dixon was selected as the overall Student of Excellence at the ceremony held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the college’s Americus campus.

Dixon was nominated for the award by her instructor, Mary Cross.  Dixon was unable to attend the ceremony due to work commitments but her instructor Mary Cross accepted the nomination certificate and spoke to the audience of classmates and family members about her outstanding marketing student.

“Kacey Dixon is a wonderful student. She is not here today because of commitment and dedication to her employer. Mrs. Dixon is a mother, a full-time employee with Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel, and also a very conscientious student.  She is an advocate for her community and an all-around proactive citizen.  She is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, and she commutes from the Macon County area and drives back and forth every day.  She is a very responsible student and member of society and it is my pleasure to nominate her for this award,” said Mrs. Cross.

The November Student of Excellence ceremony recognized students in the business programs at SGTC.  Other nominees included:  Devin Mathis of Montezuma, for Accounting; Yaneli Hernandez of DeSoto, Business Technology; Olivia Williams of Americus, Computer Information Systems; and Bigue Sarr of Dakar, Senegal.

After the other nominees received their certificates and t-shirts, David Kuipers, Vice President of Academic Affairs, explained the criteria to be chosen as the overall Student of Excellence and the benefits that come with the title before announcing Dixon as the winner. The winner is selected based on a number of criteria, including grades, work ethics, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion. As the winner, Elias was awarded with a plaque of recognition, a personal letter of recommendation from SGTC President Dr. John Watford and a $50 check for her accomplishments. Additionally, her name will be displayed on SGTC’s digital marquee as well as inscribed on a plaque in Hicks Hall among previous Student of Excellence winners.

“This is a big deal to be recognized as a Student of Excellence for your program areas as well as the overall Student of Excellence for the entire college,” said SGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs David Kuipers when he addressed the students and the instructors attending the program. “We are very proud of each of you and I encourage you to take notice of what these five outstanding students have accomplished during their time here at South Georgia Tech.”

Each month, students from certain divisions selected for that month are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. In addition to Mary Cross, additional nominating instructors included: Brenda Boone, Accounting; Anita Barron, Business Technology; Andrea Ingram, Computer Information Systems; Mary Cross, Marketing Management; and James Frey, Sports and Fitness Management.
