The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets dropped a hard fought 65 – 60 overtime decision to the NCAA Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Albany State Lady Rams in a pre-season scrimmage in the Hangar on the Americus campus recently.
“We started out very slow. We played in spurts. Then in the final minutes of the game, we did not execute and Albany State did,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets Head Basketball Coach James Frey. “There were some positives to this game, but it also showed us some things that we really need to work on before we open the regular season.”
The Lady Jets fell behind early and were down 13 – 7 at the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Lady Jets came on strong and outscored the Lady Rams from Albany 22 – 6 to take an impressive 31 – 19 half-time lead. At one time, the Lady Jets were up by as many as 15 points in the second quarter.
Albany State came back after the half and outscored the Lady Jets 19 – 16 in the third period but the Lady Jets were still up 45 – 38. In the final quarter, Albany State continued to outscore the Lady Jets 18 – 11 to tie the game at 56 – 56 at the final buzzer. In the five-minute overtime session, Albany State outscored South Georgia Tech 9 – 4. The Lady Jets also missed crucial free-throws down the stretch. “We were 7 of 17 from the foul line,” said Coach Frey. Albany State was 23 of 44 from the free throw line on the night.
Only two members of the Lady Jets scored in double-figures against Albany State. Sophomore forward Ricka Jackson of Ewa Beach, HI, and Fatou Pouye, sophomore forward from Kaolack, Senegal, were the leading scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively. Sophomore transfer Mario Hill and freshmen Amara Edeh from Enugu, Nigera, and Laky Somo from Maputo, Mozambique, each came up with nine points. Sophomore Alyssa Nieves added four points and then Bigue Sarr, Oumy Gueye, and Kamya Hollingshed closed out the scoring for the Lady Jets with two points each.
Albany State’s Norman was the only player for the Lady Rams in double figures and she had 16.
