Lady Jets remain in 1st place in GCAA conference

Swainsboro, GA – The top-ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets captured their ninth consecutive victory with a 74 – 57 victory over the second ranked East Georgia Lady Bobcats in Swainsboro, GA recently to move to 11 – 1 overall and 6 – 0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA).

    “We played much better against East Georgia,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We still have some players out and injured but we outscored East Georgia every quarter and that allowed us to take the 74 – 57 victory.”

The Lady Jets are currently ranked 19th in the nation by the National Junior College Athletic Association and the win over the Lady Bobcats left the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets as the only unbeaten team in the league. It also dropped the East Georgia Lady Bobcats into third place behind Georgia Highlands with a 3 – 2 conference record. Georgia Highlands is now in second with a 4 – 1 record.

   Sophomore forward Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din was injured in the Albany Tech game and sat out much of the fourth quarter but she came back strong against East Georgia and had a team high 27 points. She was 11 of 15 from the field and four of eight from the three-point line. She was also one of one from the foul line. In addition to leading the Lady Jets in scoring, Wazeerud-Din also had six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.

   Sophomore guard Niya Goudelock was the only other Lady Jet in double-figures. She had 11 points. Three of those were from the three-point line. She also contributed four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

   Freshman center Hope Butera came off the bench to toss in eight points, sophomore Amara Edeh added seven points, and Femme Sikuzani and Veronica Charles both had six points each. Femme Sikuzani also had eight rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Sophomore Shamari Tyson scored four points, Moe Shida added three and Oumy Gueye closed out the scoring with two points.

   The Lady Jets were up 22 – 16 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored East Georgia 16 to 13 to go into the half with 38 – 29 lead. The Lady Jets came back in the third period and added to the lead outscoring the Lady Bobcats 22 – 15 and 14 – 13 in the fourth quarter to capture the 74 – 57 victory.

    The Lady Jets shot much better. They shot 54.4% from the floor and hit 42% of their three point attempts. They also made 67% of their foul shots. They held East Georgia to 44% from the floor, 45% from the three point line and 40% from the foul line.

   The Lady Jets will now travel to Phoenix City, AL on Tuesday, December 10th to take on Chattahoochee Valley Community College. They will travel again on December 16th and 17th for the Cape Fear Classic tournament in Wilmington, N.C. where they will play Cape Fear Community College on the 16th and Lackawanna College on the 17th.

   The Lady Jets will return home to host the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 29th -31st. They will play Eastern Florida at 8 p.m. December 29th, Cape Fear Community College at 6 p.m. on December 30th and Shelton State Community College at 4 p.m. on December 31st.

The Jets will play at home when they host Florida Gateway College in Americus on December 17th at 7 p.m. They will also host the Jets Holiday Classic on December 28th and 29th. The Jets play at 4 p.m. on December 28th and again at 2 p.m. on December 29th.
