Lady Jets secure two wins in St. Petersburg Classic
St. Petersburg, FL – The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets secured two wins in the St. Petersburg Classic over the weekend to move to 3 – 1 on the season. The Lady Jets defeated Hillsboro Community College, 54 – 33, on Friday and then defeated St. Petersburg College, 71 – 63 on Saturday.
The Lady Jets will return home and host the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic on November 24 – 25. In addition to the Lady Jets, Georgia Highlands, Chipola, Andrew College, Tallahassee Community College and Miami Dade College will be participating in the Pete Arrington Classic.
Isabel Bueno, 0, led the Jets in scoring with 23 points in the win over St. Petersburg College.
The Lady Jets will host Chipola on Friday, November 24 at 6 p.m. and then play Miami Dade College at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The other action will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with Georgia Highlands facing Miami Dade and Andrew College matching up against Tallahassee at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, November 24, Andrew will play Chipola at 1 p.m., followed by Georgia Highlands and Tallahassee at 3 p.m., and the Lady Jets and Miami Dade at 5 p.m. Of the three teams in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA), South Georgia Tech is in first place with a 3 – 1 record, Andrew is in third at 2 – 4 and Georgia Highlands is fourth at 1 – 3. Tallahassee Community College is 1 – 3. They defeated East Georgia College 75 – 66 but lost to Hillsborough Community College 82 – 56. Chipola is 5 – 0, and Miami Dade is 0 – 5 with losses to Hillsborough, Florida Southwestern, Indian River, Northwest Florida State and Gulf Coast.
In the St. Petersburg Classic, Maeva, a 6’ 2” sophomore center from Quebec, Canada, led the lady Jets in scoring putting almost half of the Lady Jets total 54 points with 24. She was nine of 18 from the field and six of 10 from the foul line. She also led the team in rebounds with 19. The only other Lady Jet in double figures was Enola Papin, a freshman shooting guard from Saint Etienne, France. She had 10 points, 2 rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Sophomore Vera Gunaydin, a sophomore shooting guard from Ankara, Turkey, added nine points, Marie Diaz, a freshman forward from Spain, tossed in six and then Hinano Imamua and Jessica Kallainy both added six and Maria Favero had one point.
In the Lady Jets match-up against St. Petersburg College, the Lady Jets had to come from behind to take the 71 – 63 victory. The Lady jets fell behind 10 – 6 at the end of the first quarter but rallied to tie the game at 22 – 22 by the half. The Lady Jets outscored St. Petersburg 23 – 17 in the third period and 26 – 24 in the fourth to capture the 71 – 63 victory.
Isabel Bueno, a sophomore guard from Sao Paulao, Brazil, led the Lady Jets in scoring in this match-up. She had a total of 23 points. She was 10 0f 16 from the field, two of four from the three-point line and walked away with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Maeva Fotsa was the only other Lady Jet in double-digits with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Enola Papin tossed in eight points, Vera Gunaydin and Destiny Bishop both added seven points, Maria Favero scored six and Jessica Kailainy closed out the scoring with one point.
The Lady jets are off until the Pete Arrington Classic after Thanksgiving but the Jets will host New Rock Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21.
