Students on the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Crisp County Center campus recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop on the importance of reading and writing skills. The workshop was conducted by SGTC English instructor and new Admissions Coordinator Katrice Taylor. In addition to stressing the value of reading and writing skills, Taylor also offered strategies to strengthen those skills and get more out of time spent engaged in reading and writing activities.

Taylor noted that reading exposes one to new ideas and can be a valuable tool for self-improvement. It can also help the reader better understand concepts, prepare for action, gain the benefits of others’ experience, and become better communicators. Taylor explained to students in attendance that reading helps develop the brain and can boost imagination and creativity.

As with reading, Taylor explained that learning to write effectively likewise improves communication skills and creativity. She emphasized the importance of knowing the purpose of a writing task and preparing before starting to write.

Students in the workshop also learned about phases of the writing process and the proper format for various writing assignments.

In her conclusion to the workshop, Taylor encouraged students to actively work on their reading and writing skills. She explained that, as with any skill, improvement comes through practice.
