SGTC GOAL Student Keyara Williams Takes the Stage in Local Production of Matilda
South Georgia Technical College’s 2026 GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) student Keyara Williams stepped into the spotlight in a new way recently—bringing her passion for education and service to the stage in the Sumter Players’ production of Matilda the Musical.
Williams, who is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Care and Education at SGTC, made her stage debut in the role of Miss Honey, the kind and supportive teacher who plays a pivotal role in the story.
The production, directed by Irmgard Schopen-Davis, featured a large cast of performers from across the community, including students from local schools, colleges, and universities. For Williams, the opportunity to participate in the production connected directly with her academic and career goals.

“Like me, Miss Honey wants to help her students be the best they can be and protect them from harm,” Williams said. “But she also struggles with fears that she can’t do it on her own.”
Williams said she was encouraged to audition by her sister, who was also part of the production and a fellow SGTC student. Once cast, she quickly found a deeper connection to the character, recognizing similarities between Miss Honey’s compassion and her own aspirations as a future educator.
She believes the character represents an important role that many children need. “The world needs more ‘Miss Honeys,’” Williams said. “Many children are missing that connection with a caring mentor or teacher who wants to do more than simply pass them along to the next grade. When I become a teacher, I hope I care as much—if not more—than Miss Honey.”
Matilda the Musical tells the story of a young girl who overcomes difficult circumstances through intelligence, courage, and determination. Those same qualities are reflected in Williams’ journey at SGTC, where she has been recognized as the college’s GOAL student for her leadership, academic achievement, and commitment to her field.
Williams’ involvement in the production highlights the diverse talents of SGTC students and their engagement in the community beyond the classroom. As she prepares for a career in education, her role in Matilda offered a meaningful opportunity to bring her passion for helping others to life—both on stage and in her future profession.
